Rock of the Woods Invasion!

Where the arbutus trees line the hillsides and subtly arch inland to give way to the prevailing winds, where the spirits of yesterday drift through one of BC’s most prolific ghost towns, where the smells are of ocean, wood & rock – here is where you’ll find some of the most amazing music being assembled on Vancouver Island this year. Here’s where you’ll find Rock of the Woods! This amazing project is driven by Dave Bain of Surge in Victoria – and Sunset Labs couldn’t be more excited to support the birthing of this new gathering – quite likely to become Vancouver Island’s ‘next big thing’. For 3 days & 2 nights the Malahat community of Bamberton plays hosts to this celebration of community spirit and youthful creativity. Rock of the Woods will offer a showcase of musical talent, both celebrated and little known, local and global. This festival will have a lasting impact by building sustainable and positive relationships between artists, nature, community, and business.

The Sunset Labs team couldn’t help but throw our hats in the ring, and mostly you’ll find us running the Labs Lounge – a beautiful and humble space in the woods with a coffee bar, movie theatre, some cozy seating and yknow.. a dj rig & yummy sound system. All the exact details are still being penciled in – but here’s the parts that are pretty certain! First – this zone of ours will host the majority of the electronica that will show up at Rock of the Woods, and second – we’ll be definitely featuring the loungey, sultry, gorgeous beats of DJs Marlee, Toby Emerson, AFK, Shark en Ciel, Carson, & Ryan Juice! Labs member Natron will also be dropping some beats between sets on the mainstage – mraowr.

Do join us – this festival, as with all first-year projects of this scope, really needs our community to galvanize behind it – and your help in spreading the word and building the event’s attendance will play a huge role in the sustainability of the festival. Our intention as Sunset Labs is, many years from now, when Rock of the Woods sits amongst the most amazing fests on Vancouver Island, to be able to say “Yes, we played a small role in bringing this thing to life.” Will you do so too?
