sub|division Interviews Natron

The third in our series of interviews with extended sub|div family members, we chat with Nathan Docksteader aka Natron. Docksteader recently opened for Eddie C and proved why he’s steadily gaining one of Victoria’s most devoted fanbases. His refined selection of deep body music is something that has been lacking in Victoria over the past few years, so Natron’s deeper placement within the sub|div continuum smacks of great timing.

Earlier this year, he put together a fantastic mix for Rifflandia

What’s the story behind your name?

Ha! I wish there was an overly crazy story behind the name Natron, but it’s something I thought of when I was 16. Heh… I dreamt of being a DJ when I was a young teenager while watching episodes of Electric Circus on Friday nights. Now, however I am not exactly electrified by the name but I think changing it at this point would do more harm than good. Perhaps when I finally finish my own tracks I will release them under an alias such as ‘Nathan D’ or ‘Docksteader’.

How was your experience at Rifflandia this year?

Yeah It was awesome, inspiring and such an honour to be asked to play. Rifflandia is such a extraordinary event on so many levels, and from an emerging artist’s point of view, it is such a great avenue to present oneself to a bevy of wide eyed, salivating festival goers that scream “Feed me music!!” Playing for a crowd that is up for just getting low and loose is really what does it for me. Also, it really solidified my thoughts that hard work does & will pay off. If you’re passionate about something, pursue it, because you just never know what may reveal itself when you do. Sounds cliche & simple, I know.

How does it feel to be playing sub|division on the regular?

Being an artist who is consistently working on their craft, I never create time to measure up where I am now vs where I was a year ago, even though I know there has been positive advancement I have a difficult time seeing my musical proliferation. It’s like, when you were young and you would go visit your grandparents who you haven’t seen in years and the first words out of their mouths are “My! Have you ever grown!” Well no kidding Grandma! The cats behind sub|division have worked their asses off to build an entity that is more than just music, it’s a culture that intertwines photography, writing, music and above all people who are passionate about art. The people that show up to these events are what make the events, it’s definitely an honour to be mentioned with this crew.
