Screening: Electronic Awakening!

Mark your calendars! One of the most brilliant, artistic & compelling explorations of dance culture to come along – particularly in a documentary – has been born in Electronic Awakening – “A Documentary Following the Conscious Evolution of Electronic Dance Culture”! This amazing piece debuted on Vancouver Island when we co-created OUR Earthdance last year, and will be making its first Victoria showing on Friday April 20th at the Victoria Event Centre (as part of the Cosmic Caravan Celebration).

ELECTRONIC AWAKENING is an ethnographic documentary film which investigates the spirituality and mysticism of Electronic Dance Music Culture (EDMC) and includes information about 2012 that hasn’t been released in the mainstream market as it relates to dance culture. In Electronic Awakening, director Andrew Johner lifts the veil on an underground spiritual movement that has developed within electronic music cultures worldwide. This close encounter with the mysticism of rave questions the origin of religion, and offers insight into future of man’s spirituality. It investigates this culture’s significance to the prophecies of 2012, how this bizarre and sacral relationship to electronic music has evolved the group overtime, and where it all seems to be leading them…

Director Andrew Johner writes, “In the summer of 2006 I traveled out West under a grant from my university to attend an assortment of parties and festivals investigating the mysticism of Electronic Music Culture. As an outsider to the scene, I was deeply intrigued to discover that such a deep spirituality existed within this community. Throughout the course of my initial field research I continuously encountered stories of life-changing experiences that were happening on the dance floor at these events. From my previous research into the subject of ancient religions, I questioned if what was being experienced at these parties were in fact tapping the same “sacred” source as shamans of the archaic past. I theorized that if there were some true and gnostic connection between ancient ritual and this contemporary youth phenomena, an intrinsic spirituality would have developed within this dance community. What I discovered was everything I could have imagined, but nothing at all what I expected… I hope that the inspiration and passion I received from my experience with this culture will prevail through this film, and that I may offer as much of the beauty of that ‘moment of oneness’ we all have in the music to those who have yet to experience it.”

One of the great Christmas gifts we got to give ourselves in December was an amazing night with Bird of Prey and his hoop-tastic partner Kit! Evan Boyd Photography was on hand to capture some of the magic, which we now share with you!

Kit Shares Hoopdance Mastery

I’ve attended Shambhala Music Festival 6 times now – and for each of those experiences a few key magical memories always hold the event distinct from other years. 2004 was my first Shambhala experience – and really, it blurred together in a myriad of colour & people & music & adventures. 2005 we had an epic bus road trip with 20 crazy people, I shared random adventures with Dodd & Colin & Keoni, hit the hot air balloon with Rayz of Sunshine & Jo & Ashley, had deep & impactful dialogue with Spider, and met Lorin for the first time. 2008 was all music & close friends, drum circles & no sleep :) And 2011? I caught Bird of Prey LIVE for the first time and met he & his amazing wife Kit.

I was behind Bird of Prey filming at the Living Room (beach stage) when Kit stepped up to the platform they had created for her out front of the stage – and soon as I caught a glimpse of her moves I shifted out front to catch her in the act. My god. To describe in words the motion & mastery she has acquired with hula hoops can’t possibly do her justice – I’ll say only that the alchemy of her powerful performance combined with Bird of Prey’s beats remains an absolute highlight of my Shambhala memory and that we now have the opportunity of hosting them both at Sunset Room is a rare honour!

Let me share a bit from Kit’s bio!: “A trained, dedicated and world renowned circus performer with a wide range of skills and abilities, KiT~ is an internationally acclaimed Hula Hoop Dancer and Fire Performer. She is 2008’s Fire Hooper of the Year and well known in the TV/Movie world. She has worked with such names as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, TPain, Ludacris, Jessica Biel, and appeared on CSI NY, Budweiser Superbowl commercial, & the Jimmy Kimmel show. KiT~ is an inspiration in both the fire spinning and hula hoop dancing communities as both an educator and performer. Most recognized within the company of Zen Arts, her inspiring performances and workshops will captivate any audience.

KiT~ tours with husband Bird of Prey, a San Francisco bay area native Torin Goodnight. Creating electronic music for over a decade, he has developed a unique and very distinct sound. His music hybridizes various genres, fusing the enveloping sensibilities of psychedelic sound with hard hitting dubstep and breakbeat elements. His style contains a high level of cerebral activity not commonly found in many urban genres. Combining aggressive basslines, twisted leads, and colorful atmospheres to create diverse and immersive soundscapes. KiT’s out of this world, freestyle moves to Bird of Prey’s mesmerizing beats will electrify any audience.”

I don’t disagree with a single word – and neither will you. :)
