Indigenomics: Economics from an Indigenous worldview
Empowering self-determination through business for First Nations people

Join us for a First Nations led discussion exploring the concept of Indigenomics and economic self-determination with leading First Nations speakers from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The event is hybrid, so that participants in Victoria British Columbia Canada can join in person, while participants from Canada, New Zealand and Australia can join us online.
The event will comprise a context-setting led by Carol Anne, followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Tiarne Shutt, Director of Business Development at First Australians Capital along with Te Puoho Katene, Executive Director of Tapuwae Roa.

According to Carol Anne, Indigenomics honours the powerful thinking of indigenous wisdom of local economy, relationships and human values. Indigenomics is about increasing the role and visibility of indigenous peoples in the new economy.
Carol Anne is also the author of a book by the same title “Indigenomics – Taking a Seat at the Economics Table.” In her work at the Global Center of Indigenomics, she is facilitating collective Indigenous economic leadership, knowledge development and creating generational value, while building the space for valuing Indigenous worldviews of economy and well being through culture, digital arts and technology.

Tiarne Shutt is a proud First Nations woman with ancestral ties to the Worimi people. An experienced strategist and passionate storyteller. Tiarne excels at pushing boundaries, shifting mindsets, and affecting social change through storytelling and relationship building. Tiarne is at her best when she can use story and compassion to facilitate conversations focused on action. Tiarne is based on Yuggera Country in Meanjin (Brisbane).
Te Puoho Katene
Executive Director, Tapuwae Roa
Te Pūoho (Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Tama tribes) is the Executive Director of Tapuwae Roa (formerly Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust), a charitable Trust pursuing targeted social change within an indigenous values-based impact framework. The Trust’s philanthropic and investment activity targets outcomes for Māori in three priority areas: education & training, traditional and scientific knowledge systems, and leadership Development. An established governor, Te Pūoho serves as a Trustee for his Ngāti Toa tribe, the Ākina Foundation (a social impact consultancy), and is an Independent Director for Armillary Private Capital, Wakatū Inc’s Manaaki board, and Waikato-Tainui’s Distributions Committee. A graduate of Stanford Business School, a Fulbright Scholar and an Obama Foundation Leader: Asia-Pacific, Te Pūoho brings a global outlook on leveraging global best practice within an indigenous, values-based lens.

TE WAKA PROJECT
Why this event? This event is a part of the Te Waka Project, a digital storytelling campaign and platform featuring stories of impact created in collaboration with First Nations people and the “Business For Good” network of Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The project is stewarding the journey of Te Waka from Australia to Amsterdam for the 2023 Edition of the Social Enterprise World Forum. The journey includes a group of 14 First Nations delegates from Australia and New Zealand stopping in Victoria BC to connect with Carol Anne and her team at the Indigenomics Institute.
