SUMMARY:A Gathering of Stories
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Gathering of Stories: The Heart of the Feminine\nOver the past centuries\, much of our human societies have come under a system of domination\, developed and controlled by uninitiated men. Men who have not been guided through a rite of passage into proper adulthood\, where they recognize their place in the great dance of life. \nWithin this trance\, what are considered “masculine qualities” (rationality\, competition\, power) have come to be the most highly prized\, and rewarded. “Feminine qualities” such as collaboration\, emotional intelligence (EQ) and compassion have been diminished as less worthy\, and have denied the expression of different kinds of power and beauty that are potent medicine needed for these times. \nJuly 2021 weaved storytellers\, musicians and poets in response to the question: what power lies within the heart of the feminine? \nThe Experience\nGuided by co-hosts Pulxaneeks & Tonye Aganaba\, the day wove a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience was invited to dive deeper with a shared conversation with the teller\, connecting around the themes and insights. \nWhat is a Gathering of Stories?\nA Gathering of Stories is a seasonal ceremony\, conducted over livestream\, bringing together renowned storytellers\, musicians and poets from around the world\, providing new insight and perspectives on the most vital themes of our time. \nEach day weaves a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience are invited to dive deeper into a shared conversation with the teller\, connecting around the themes\, insights\, and characters that naturally spill forth from this old time magic.\n  \nAccess the Replay HERE!\nTERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\n\nSunset Labs sits on the traditional\, ancestral\, unceded homelands of the Lekwungen people\, now also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We endeavour to honour this land\, its peoples and treaties by strengthening our relationship and responsibilities to them. We acknowledge and thank the Lekwungen people\, on whose land we live\, work\, create\, dance and play.\n

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Mythic Masculine | Warrior Within | Uplift | MysterySchool.tv | The Rowe Center\nProudly Present…\nA Gathering of Stories – Theme: The Soul of Masculinity\nA Gathering of Stories is a two day storytelling festival\, conducted over livestream\, bringing together renowned storytellers\, musicians and poets from around the world\, providing new insight and perspectives for tending the soul of the masculine. \nEach day will weave a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience will be invited to dive deeper into a conversation with the teller and fellow attendees\, connecting around the themes\, insights\, and characters that naturally spill forth from this old time magic. \nMany would say the Masculine has been ill for some time. When we speak of men\, or the inner Masculine within us all – many are struggling under violence\, depression and addiction\, or lost in toxic power games and perpetuating ecological collapse. \nIn the era of #metoo and the scales of social justice tipping toward a much needed reckoning\, there seem to be few pathways towards a Masculine that is powerful\, nurturing\, and connected. Perhaps we might look to the old stories for guidance\, to shine light anew on modern challenges and illuminate how we might yet become?\nThis inaugural Gathering of Stories is aimed at shining a beacon of possibility and magic\, at a time when the mythic imagination must play a vital role once again. \nThe gathering is hosted by Ian MacKenzie\, founder of The Mythic Masculine Podcast and Network.\n  \nGET TICKETS HERE\n  \nA Gathering of Stories – Theme: The Soul of Masculinity will be hosted at Sunset Labs and livestreamed by Stream of Consciousness. \nPlease note\, this is a VIRTUAL ONLY event\, there will be no in-person audience.

SUMMARY:REINFORCING COMMUNITIES
DESCRIPTION:The increased number of brain injuries resulting from overdoses is concerning. These individuals are often younger and may require a higher level of care. Communities need to be able to respond. \nPeople are able to do the work of healing when the community they live in is strong and can provide the services they need. In turn\, the more a person thrives\, so too\, will the community. \nThis event opens the conversation on what is needed to strenghten communities on all levels to address the intersections of mental health\, addictions\, and brain injury with the development of an integrated provincial service delivery plan which considers disparities between the quality\, options\, and accessibility of services and supports across the health authorities. \nPlease join us so your voice is heard! \nDr. John Higenbottam is a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who has held senior clinical leadership positions in British Columbia including Vice President\, Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre\, Vice President\, BC Rehab and Vice President\, Riverview Hospital. \nJohn has also held several academic positions\, including Adjunct Associate Professor\, University of Victoria\, Associate Dean and Chair\, Psychology at Douglas College. He is currently Faculty Emeritus\, Douglas College and Clinical Professor\, Department of Psychiatry\, UBC. John is also Editor in Chief\, Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health which has become an important venue for Canadian mental health research. \nJohn is Chair\, Psychosocial Rehabilitation\, Réadaptation Psychosociale Canada (PSR/RPS Canada) and Chair of its BC Chapter. PSR Canada is Canada’s major organization promoting Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) practices as essential to recovery and mental health system reform. BC and served for two terms as Chair\, Canadian Alliance for Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH)\, Canada’s major alliance of 19 national mental health organizations. He is also a Director\, BC’s Community Action Initiative. \nJohn also served two terms as a member of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Service Systems Advisory Committee. While on this committee\, he co-led a major national study and report on mental health housing\, Turning the Key. \nJohn’s major clinical and research interests are in developing\, implementing and evaluating effective\, recovery oriented services for people with complex needs. \nJoin us to hear the concerns of Dr. Elizabeth Plant regarding overdose survival and brain injury. Dr. Plant’s current roles include the Cowichan District Addiction Medicine Consult Service (AMCS)\, AMCS Community\, outreach at the overdose prevention site\, and developing substance use supports for youth. She has completed her addiction medicine fellowship with the British Columbia Centre for Substance. \n\nABOUT THE HEADS TOGETHER THINK TANK SERIES\nWhat you can expect?\nReal Conversations Leading to Real Solutions. \n4 Virtual Events. Each with a specific focus and goal. We are looking to bridge the gaps in services for mental health\, addictions\, and brain injury throughout the province to inspire real change. \nWe want to open the conversation to see what is working provincially\, what isn’t working\, and where do we need to shift. What are the next steps to integrating services? Your input is needed! \nFull series details: https://headstogetherthinktank.com/

SUMMARY:REHABILITATION & COMMUNITY SUPPORTS
DESCRIPTION:Everyone deserves to have a sense of belonging in their community. People living with mental health issues\, addictions\, and/or a brain injury often feel disconnected from loved ones\, family\, friends\, and the community-at-large. We know they do better when the services needed are accessible\, equitable\, client-centered\, wellness focused\, culturally safe\, diversified\, and flexible. Too often\, however\, the services are siloed and a person and their family are challenged to navigate a fragmented system. In some instances\, the system feels non-existent. \nWe want to hear about what is working in communities across the province and to collaborate on how wrap-around services can be developed\, expanded\, and improved to help people thrive in their journey with better outcomes. \nDr. Don Castaldi is the founder and Executive Director of DC Waterstone Services a multi-service organization created with a commitment to increase understanding of human behaviour and inspire people and groups to thrive and grow irrespective of circumstance\, mental health or history. He is also the co-founder of the internationally recognized relationship-based support program S.I.V.A. (Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments) Training. Holding a doctorate in clinical psychology with specializations in attachment\, trauma and forensics\, Dr. Castaldi has over 25 years of experience and is a perennial advisor and international speaker to numerous organizations and professionals in support of individuals impacted by mental health\, neurodevelopment and brain injury. \nThe Brain Injury Alliance\, established in 2014\, administers the Brain Injury Fund (BIF)\, established by the Province of BC in 2015. The membership of the Alliance comprises 13 brain injury societies that collectively provide services and programs to some 4000 individuals who are living with a brain injury\, annually. \nThe board of the Alliance\, elected by the membership\, adjudicates grant requests and distributes approximately one million dollars annually from the BIF to help fund member agency delivered programs and services. \nWhy does the Alliance matter? \nCommunity brain injury societies are an important component of the health and human service sector in BC.\nAlliance funding is vital to service provision for more than 4000 British Columbians with brain injuries annually.\nFunds distributed by the Alliance has improved timely access to quality brain injury services at the community level.\nPrograms and services delivered with the aid of Alliance funding are delivered at no charge to the person with a brain injury.\nAlliance funding fosters innovation and efficiency at the community level.

SUMMARY:REAL PEOPLE – REAL STORIES
DESCRIPTION:Survivors of brain injury share their profound journey through mental health\, addictions\, and brain injury. They will share their journey of homelessness\, incarceration\, and struggling for years without knowing any services were available to them. Prepare to be inspired and moved by their courage and will to create change for themselves and their communities. \nThe impact of a brain injury affects the entire family. The added pressures of navigating a fragmented system to find supports that include mental health and/or addiction services is daunting. Hear these families share what they need from the outside world so they can thrive and rebuild their lives. \nHear from individuals\, like Geri Bemister Williams\, who have overcome all odds to rebuild and redesign their life and are now serving professionally in the mental health\, addictions\, and brain injury communities. \nYou don’t want to miss hearing Geri’s story of triumph. She understands the path of mental health\, addictions\, and brain injury and is passionate about her work in helping others. She is an amazing speaker with an incredible message. \n\nABOUT THE HEADS TOGETHER THINK TANK SERIES\nWhat you can expect?\nReal Conversations Leading to Real Solutions. \n4 Virtual Events. SUMMARY:DANCELABS
DESCRIPTION:  \n>>> ♥ D A N C E L A B S ♥ <<<\nWe need more dance! And GREAT music!\nAnd we’re missing our connection\, and our festivals\, and our touring superstar producers and artists! \nI reached out to some friends and asked if they would contribute a LIVE set to a Sunset benefit event\, and a bit to my surprise\, they ALL said YES – and their schedules all aligned for ONE date – JULY 17! I’m so grateful and humbled by the generosity of our amazing community – deep bows to Dakini\, Drumspyder\, Desert Dwellers\, SaQi and Mihirangi for their interest in lifting our little Victoria venue and dance tribe here. \nWe can’t call this a festival… but have you ever seen these 5 acts on the same lineup in the same evening?! This is awesome badass blessed bonkers music madness. \nThis virtual party is going to be the BEST. We are using professional livestream and audio gear to manage the broadcast\, working closely with artists to support their LIVE delivery into the event\, and we have some very fun additional elements we’ll be weaving in to make our evening together all the better. Hope you can join us :))\n \n \nGET TICKETS \n  \n\nWHY A FUNDRAISER?\nRight now\, there’s so many people and purposes that need our support. We don’t have to look far to find people\, causes and organizations who really need some extra care\, attention\, resources and support. So… asking for your help in this moment feels imperfect\, and that said\, Sunset needs some help. \nThis unusual moment has been really impactful on Sunset Labs (and venues everywhere!). With plenty of 2020 bookings in the calendar\, we went ‘all in’ on a renovation December-January… and made a number of huge changes at the venue. An end-to-end paint job… upgrades to lighting\, sound\, seating\, power\, airflow… new floors\, new ceilings\, a new mini-stage… so much. It’s the most dramatic overhaul in the venue’s history\, and since COVID landed just after we re-opened… very few people have seen it. But it’s great\, you’ll love it. We love it. \nEconomically\, Sunset Labs has long been effectively a breakeven scenario. There’s very little money in arts\, kids birthdays\, film screenings\, non-profit programs\, dance culture\, and workshops (yes there’s money in alcohol\, but we’re not interested in being licensed). We’ve never really designed or intended Sunset Labs to make a bunch of money… just to make a bunch of difference for our guests and community – a fun\, safe\, creative\, lifting community space that advances people and projects that matter\, and we feel really good about what we’ve been up to\, in these last few years in particular. \nSo\, now to THIS moment. On the heels of our big renovation & upgrades with Sunset already low on resources suddenly COVID hit. All the spring/summer bookings were cancelled and we’ve been offering future credits and returning deposits. We’ve now been months without income and as far as we and other venue owners can tell… there’s no aid in place for venues provincially or federally\, and no end in sight to serious constraints on our operations. We need to create some resources now. Thanks for whatever support you can bring to help Sunset catch up and pivot to this unusual moment. \n  \n\nOUR ARTISTS & CONTRIBUTORS\nMIHIRANGI | New Zealand\nreverbnation.com/mihirangi/ \nSaQi | Jumpsuit Records\, USA\nhttps://www.saqimusic.com/ \nDRUMSPYDER | Bay Area\, USA\nhttps://www.drumspyder.com/ \nDAKINI | Bay Area\, USA\nhttps://www.facebook.com/DjDakini/ \nDESERT DWELLERS | Colorado\, USA\nhttps://desertdwellersmusic.bandcamp.com/ \nlive art by KASHI INNANI\nkashivisionaryart.com \nvisuals by JOHNATHAN SINGER\nhttp://johnathansinger.com/ \n  \n\nTHE PARTY IS ONLINE!\nThis online party won’t be just another zoom call. We’re pullin out all the stops and this will be a beautiful\, high-definition\, multi-camera\, interactive broadcast. Get your biggest screen & sound system setup and be ready to dance the night away in the living room! \nThe coolest thing about offering a livestream for this event is that you and your friends can attend from ANYWHERE in the world with an internet connection! Through our easy online webinar system\, you can engage with other viewers. You certainly CAN choose to just sit back and watch & listen\, if you like – your active participation isn’t an expectation\, but it IS an opportunity. \nI am deeply aware that many members of the Sunset Labs community have also experienced significant financial impact\, so if you wish to attend the livestream but lack the funds to contribute at this time\, please don’t let that get in your way and just contribute the minimum amount of $2 – we all need the dance right now. \n  \n\nHELP US SPREAD THE WORD?\nAs online dance events go\, we think this one will be pretty special\, and for the enjoyment of all – as well as generating extra support for Sunset – we’d love your help in spreading the word about this event. The EASIEST way is via the Facebook event HERE. Just hit INVITE and invite all your friends who might enjoy this night! Also\, you can engage on the event wall\, post this event to your own page. and of course\, go old school and actually call and invite some friends :)) Thanks for any efforts here to get the word out! \n  \n\nDONATE\, PRE-PURCHASE\, or INVEST\nA few people have reached out expressing they can’t tune in to this event but they’d like to contribute some dollars to the sustainability & evolution of Sunset Labs. What we’re creating to facilitate this is more like a coupon – an internal currency we’re calling LAB$ (“Labs”) – which is effectively just a gift certificate… which can later be redeemed towards venue rentals\, media production\, and tickets to internally produced events. If you want to purchase some LAB$ to help the venue grow\, please send an etransfer or paypal to labs@sunsetlabs.ca ❤ \n  \n\nSPECIAL THANKS TO!\nDodd’s Eye Media | www.facebook.com/doddseyemedia\nZenon Kai Imaging | www.facebook.com/zenonkaiimaging\nPK Sound Victoria | www.facebook.com/pksound\nWestern Design | www.facebook.com/westernbeginswithwe\nLong & McQuade | www.facebook.com/LongMcQuadeVictoria\nJonathan Singer | http://johnathansinger.com/\nStream of Consciousness | www.facebook.com/streamocon\n \n \nGET TICKETS \n

SUMMARY:HIP FEST: A Sunset Labs Virtual Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:CANADA DAY HIP FEST!:\nA Sunset Labs Fundraiser & Livestream\nft HIP CHECK! \nHello Sunset Labs community! \nWE MISS YOU! (do you miss us too?) What a strange time we find ourselves… to need connection and movement and community more than ever and to have exactly that\, pulled away\, for awhile. I hope you have everything you need… and are finding the growth & blessings within the confusion and circumstance. \nWHY A FUNDRAISER? \nRight now\, there’s so many people and purposes that need our support. We don’t have to look far right now to find people\, causes and organizations who really need some extra care\, attention\, resources and support. So… asking for your help in this moment feels imperfect\, and that said\, I am writing to ask for your help. \nThis unusual moment has been really impactful on Sunset Labs. With plenty of 2020 bookings in the calendar\, I went ‘all in’ on a renovation December-January… and made a number of huge changes at the venue. An end-to-end paint job… upgrades to lighting\, sound\, seating\, power\, airflow… new floors\, new ceilings\, a new mini-stage… so much. It’s easily the most dramatic overhaul in the venue’s history\, and since COVID landed just after we re-opened… very few people have seen it. But it’s great\, you’ll love it. I love it. \nEconomically\, Sunset Labs has long been effectively a breakeven scenario. There’s very little money in arts\, kids birthdays\, film screenings\, non-profit programs\, dance culture\, and small workshops (yes there’s money in alcohol\, but I’m not interested in being licensed). I’ve never really designed or intended Sunset Labs to make a bunch of money… just to make a lot of difference for our guests and community. A fun\, safe\, creative\, lifting community space that advances people and projects that matter. And – I feel really good about what we’ve been up to\, in these last few years in particular. \nSo\, now to THIS moment. On the heels of a big renovation (one in which all the contractors went quite over budget\, I might add)… myself & Sunset were already low on resources and suddenly COVID hit. All the spring/summer bookings were cancelled and we’ve been offering future credits and returning deposits. We’ve now been months without income and as far as I and other venue owners can tell… there’s no aid in place for venues provincially or federally\, and no end in sight to serious constraints on our operations. We need to create some resources now. \nWHY THIS HIP FEST THING? \nAnd then a few days ago\, like a hip angel arriving from out of nowhere… my friend Jonathan says… “You guys must really be struggling right now… can my band HIP CHECK host a fundraiser for Sunset Labs?” What?! And I’ve gathered quite the assortment of success stories and strategies right from the horses’ mouths.\nThis workshop is my best distillation and collection of those practices and stories. \nMy name is Tad Hargrave and I want to invite you to come and join us for this day-long workshop. \n  \n\nPRICE & REGISTRATION OPTIONS:\n$25 deposit + Pay What You Want at the End.\nWhat does this mean? You pay $25 to secure your spot. And then you get to enjoy the workshop and\, at the very end\, you can pay me whatever you’d like to pay. Were I to charge full price you’d pay $200 for this workshop but I also want to keep it accessible to those who can’t afford that amount. Plus\, the workshop might be more valuable to some than others and why should you both pay the same amount? It’s an honest-to-goodness\, decide-at-the-end\, no funny business\, pay-what-you-can/want deal. \nOR:\nI’ve made an option for you to pay 3 installments of $67. If you’d like to pay the full market value of this workshop but want to spread those payments out\, choose the 3-pay option! You’ll be charged $67 now\, and then you’ll receive an invoice from my PayPal account for 2 more payments of $67 in each of the following two months. \nOR:\nI’ve also added the option to simply pay a flat $200 market value fee for the workshop upfront. If that feels good and convenient for you\, please choose this option. It’s something that’s been requested a number of times so I’m trying it out\, but either way is fine by me. \n  \n\nWORKSHOP DETAILS\nThis is a day-long\, content-rich\, roll-up your sleeves\, nuts and bolts workshop. It’s all about how you can grow your business and attract all of the right kinds of clients. \nIn general\, here’s who this workshop is for: \nPerhaps you are selling a natural\, eco-friendly\, cruelty-free or otherwise healthy product. \nOr maybe you’re in the Healing Arts or a Holistic Practitioner? Perhaps you’re a Therapist\, Massage Therapist or Body-worker\, Yoga Instructor\, Herbalist\, Shamanic Practitioner\, Life-Coach\, Meditation Teacher etc. \nAre you a local business owner who just plain cares deeply about your community\, nature and social justice? Maybe you run a Yoga Studio\, Eco-Friendly House Cleaning company\, an Organic Farm\, a local Theatre Company\, a Fitness Studio\, a comfy\, little locally owned Bookstore\, a groovy local Restaurant\, an Eco-Store\, a Pottery shop or a Natural Health-Food Stores etc. \nOr you might be running some sort of permaculture-based business. \nAt its heart\, this workshop is all about exploring the question:\n“How can you sell your products and services without selling your soul?” \nToo much marketing (even by savvy\, conscious entrepreneurs) creates either no response or seems “over-hyped” and triggers a “used car salesman” reaction. \nSo . . .\nHow do you market your products without compromising your principles? How can you make sure your marketing gets a positive response and creates warm feelings of trust? Better yet – how do you have your ideal client approaching you\, instead of you chasing them? \nWhile mingling with like-minded peers\, you’ll learn: \nThe Three Core Foundations and Seven Elements of Your Platform that you need to attract more – and better – clients\, with absolutely zero budget. \nThe core reason why most marketing feels bad (and exactly how to make sure that your marketing avoids it). \nThe only three kinds of potential clients you will ever meet\, and the exact approach you need to take with each of them. \nWhat to Bring:\n– Pen and paper.\n– Money: your cheque book\, cash or credit card (I am also happy to accept a promissory note from you so you can pay me via PayPal or etransfer when you get home). \nA reminder about cell phones:\nPlease remember to put your phone on silent or even turn it right off. I encourage you to make the effort to really be present in the room and at the workshop. There will be a nice long lunch break and a couple of stretch breaks to check for updates if you need to! \nWhat does the day look like?\n10:00am-1:00pm – workshop\n1:00-2:30pm – lunch\n2:30-6:00pm – workshop \nSo\, that’s it. If you have any questions\, feel free to email me at admin@marketingforhippies.com otherwise I hope to see you there. \nWarmest\,\nTad Hargrave\nfounder\, marketingforhippies.com\, nichingspiral.com \n  \n\nPS: BONUS!\nWhen you register for one of these workshops you’ll get a copy of my new book How to Start\, which sells for $20 in my online shop. This book is a practical and refreshing\, seven-step workbook to use when marketing feels gross and awkward (you can do it all in one lazy\, rainy afternoon and you’ll use it for the rest of the life of your business).\nHow to Start is a tiny workbook about a little idea that could make a big difference in every piece of marketing you ever do from here on. Here’s the little idea: what if you made the heart of your marketing strategy about how your marketing feels to you and others? \n\nAbout Tad Hargrave\nTad is a hippy who developed a knack for marketing (and then learned how to be a hippy again.) For almost a decade\, he has been touring his marketing workshops around Canada\, bringing refreshing and unorthodox ideas to conscious entrepreneurs and green businesses that help them grow their organizations and businesses (without selling their souls).\nHe does improv comedy semi-professionally\, co-runs Edmonton’s progressive community building network TheLocalGood.ca\, founded streetcarshows.com\, indigodrinks.ca\, socialyogiyeg.com\, and the Jams program of yesworld.org. He speaks Scottish Gaelic and helps to run novascotiagaelsjam.com and is also a huge Doctor Who nerd. \nTad currently lives in Edmonton\, Alberta (traditionally known\, in the local indigenous language of the Cree\, as Amiskwaciy (Beaver Hill) and later Amiskwaciwaskihegan (Beaver Hill House) and his ancestors come primarily from Scotland with some from the Ukraine as well. He is drawn to conversations around politics\, history\, ancestry\, healing and how those all intersect.\nYou can learn more about Tad and his work at marketingforhippies.com\, nichingspiral.com \n  \n\nCan’t make it?\nCheck out:\nMarketing for Hippies Video and Workbook

SUMMARY:Leap Day Holotropic Breathwork
DESCRIPTION:Take a Leap on Leap Day!\nGrof Holotropic BreathworkTM uses Breath as Sacred Medicine to evoke non-ordinary states of consciousness for self-discovery and healing using accelerated breathing to an exquisite soundscape. Dr Stan Grof and the late Christina Grof pioneered this approach starting in the 1970s when research into the healing potential of non ordinary states with psychedelic medicines was stopped. Although Holotropic Breathwork is similar to the use of some sacred and psychedelic medicines it is a substance-free and natural approach to expanding consciousness and integrating mind\, body and spirit. A session follows the basic set and setting of a psychedelic session and therefore is part of the training of psychedelic psychotherapists. \n\nPreregister Here\nhttp://www.thesecretofbreath.com/workshops-all \nSunset Lab provides an amazing facility in the heart of the city yet private with a professional sound system! Doors open at 8:45 am for a 9 am start. Finish is approximately 7 pm. Light meals included in $140 early bird price. \n\nMore info on Holotropic Breathwork is available at this link:\nhttp://www.thesecretofbreath.com/workshops-all

SUMMARY:GIFT Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the breathtaking and richly cinematic documentary THE GIFT\, followed by a Q&A session with award winning Filmmaker Robin McKenna\, who will be joining us LIVE via Skype to answer your questions. \n“Robin McKenna’s elliptical\, poetic\, and visually arresting “Gift” examines the radical concept that creativity is not a commodity to be sold but a blessing to be shared.”\n-Peter Keogh\, The Boston Globe \nWATCH THE TRAILER: \n \nGIFT-Trailer from Gaudete Films on Vimeo. \n\nEVENT DETAILS:\nDoors: 6:30pm\nFilm: 7pm-8:30pm\nQ&A w Director: 8:30-9:00pm\nPrice: Pay What Feels Good\nTickets available at the door. \n\nABOUT THE GIFT\nInspired by Lewis Hyde’s beloved classic The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World\, GIFT is a richly cinematic film\, interweaving character-driven stories. On North America’s Pacific Northwest Coast\, a young Indigenous man undertakes the elaborate preparations for a potlatch—to make a name for himself by giving everything away. In Rome\, Italy\, a factory occupied by migrant families is transformed into a living museum\, protected by a “barricade of art”: a model of resistance\, and an invaluable gift. In the pirate utopia of Burning Man\, a mutant bumblebee art car distributes honey in a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. Meanwhile\, in Auckland\, New Zealand\, artist Mingwei Lee prepares to launch Sonic Blossom – a “transformative gift” of song. GIFT is a tribute to something that can’t be measured or counted\, bought or sold. Exploring the parallels between artists’ work and a gift economy\, it’s a reflection on the creative process\, the reasons we “labour in service of our gifts”\, and a celebration of the imagination. \nABOUT ROBIN MCKENNA \nRobin McKenna began making films with La Course destination monde. Her film\, The Great War Experience won Yorkton Film Festival’s Founders’ Award in 2007. Her cinematography credits include City of Borders (Berlinale\, HotDocs 2008) and The Take with Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis (AFI Best Documentary\, 2004). She is an alumnus of Hot Docs Doc Lab\, and has been a filmmaker-mentor with Wapikoni Mobile. GIFT is Robin’s first feature documentary. Currently\, she is direction a short film with the National Film Board for the Governor General’s Award for the Performing Arts and finishing Thanadoula\, a short documentary fairytale about a girl’s search for her older sister and the “crow magic” connecting them. She is a producer/co-director of Medicine\, a feature documentary in post-production about ayahuasca\, medicine and healing. \n\nPRAISE FOR THE GIFT! \n“Thank you for this magisterial film\, subtle as it is on the revolutionary nature of art and the power forged when we honor our gifts and give them away. A dream\, a meditation\, a call to action.\n-Terry Tempest Williams\, author & environmentalist \n“At a time when art is relentlessly commercialized and commodified\, Robin McKenna’s “Gift” provides a gentle and welcome reminder of other values.”\n-A.O. Scott\, The New York Times \n“A beautiful\, moving\, and thought-provoking reflection on the creative process and the things that make us human.”\n-Jonathan Lethem\, novelist \n“GIFT presents us with a rare opportunity to escape the relentless logic of the market and to reclaim a little bit of our human freedom.”\n-Le Devoir \n“GIFT is a poetic outlook on gift economies through art and cultural practices. It follows four storylines linked by creativity\, generosity\, resistance and defiance.”\n-Phi Centre \n“As we witnessed the transformative power of this gift\, our eyes filled with tears. This kind of art cannot be measured or counted; it is priceless. It travels from heart to heart and keeps on moving.”\n-Spirituality and Practice
