SUMMARY:Earth Day Screening of The Magnitude of All Things
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Earth Day\, April 22 watch Jennifer Abbott’s award-winning documentary The Magnitude of All Things.\nIn partnership with The Climate Reality Project and Sunset Labs\, join us for a screening and Q&A with filmmaker in attendance. \nThe award-winning documentary The Magnitude of All Things merges stories from the frontlines of climate change with recollections of the loss of her sister\, drawing intimate parallels between personal and planetary grief. \nWhen Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer\, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown. Abbott’s new documentary draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. For the people featured\, climate change is not happening in the distant future: it is kicking down the front door. Battles waged\, lamentations of loss\, and raw testimony coalesce into an extraordinary tapestry\, woven together with raw emotion and staggering beauty that transform darkness into light\, grief into action. \nThe film will be launched nation-wide on CBC-Gem and on the NFB website on Earth Day April 22nd. \nCome celebrate with us April 21st at 4:00pm (Doors Open) film at 4:15pm. \n \nGET TICKETS HERE\n

SUMMARY:GIFT Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the breathtaking and richly cinematic documentary THE GIFT\, followed by a Q&A session with award winning Filmmaker Robin McKenna\, who will be joining us LIVE via Skype to answer your questions. \n“Robin McKenna’s elliptical\, poetic\, and visually arresting “Gift” examines the radical concept that creativity is not a commodity to be sold but a blessing to be shared.”\n-Peter Keogh\, The Boston Globe \nWATCH THE TRAILER: \n \nGIFT-Trailer from Gaudete Films on Vimeo. \n\nEVENT DETAILS:\nDoors: 6:30pm\nFilm: 7pm-8:30pm\nQ&A w Director: 8:30-9:00pm\nPrice: Pay What Feels Good\nTickets available at the door. \n\nABOUT THE GIFT\nInspired by Lewis Hyde’s beloved classic The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World\, GIFT is a richly cinematic film\, interweaving character-driven stories. On North America’s Pacific Northwest Coast\, a young Indigenous man undertakes the elaborate preparations for a potlatch—to make a name for himself by giving everything away. In Rome\, Italy\, a factory occupied by migrant families is transformed into a living museum\, protected by a “barricade of art”: a model of resistance\, and an invaluable gift. In the pirate utopia of Burning Man\, a mutant bumblebee art car distributes honey in a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. Meanwhile\, in Auckland\, New Zealand\, artist Mingwei Lee prepares to launch Sonic Blossom – a “transformative gift” of song. GIFT is a tribute to something that can’t be measured or counted\, bought or sold. Exploring the parallels between artists’ work and a gift economy\, it’s a reflection on the creative process\, the reasons we “labour in service of our gifts”\, and a celebration of the imagination. \nABOUT ROBIN MCKENNA \nRobin McKenna began making films with La Course destination monde. Her film\, The Great War Experience won Yorkton Film Festival’s Founders’ Award in 2007. Her cinematography credits include City of Borders (Berlinale\, HotDocs 2008) and The Take with Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis (AFI Best Documentary\, 2004). She is an alumnus of Hot Docs Doc Lab\, and has been a filmmaker-mentor with Wapikoni Mobile. GIFT is Robin’s first feature documentary. Currently\, she is direction a short film with the National Film Board for the Governor General’s Award for the Performing Arts and finishing Thanadoula\, a short documentary fairytale about a girl’s search for her older sister and the “crow magic” connecting them. She is a producer/co-director of Medicine\, a feature documentary in post-production about ayahuasca\, medicine and healing. \n\nPRAISE FOR THE GIFT! \n“Thank you for this magisterial film\, subtle as it is on the revolutionary nature of art and the power forged when we honor our gifts and give them away. A dream\, a meditation\, a call to action.\n-Terry Tempest Williams\, author & environmentalist \n“At a time when art is relentlessly commercialized and commodified\, Robin McKenna’s “Gift” provides a gentle and welcome reminder of other values.”\n-A.O. Scott\, The New York Times \n“A beautiful\, moving\, and thought-provoking reflection on the creative process and the things that make us human.”\n-Jonathan Lethem\, novelist \n“GIFT presents us with a rare opportunity to escape the relentless logic of the market and to reclaim a little bit of our human freedom.”\n-Le Devoir \n“GIFT is a poetic outlook on gift economies through art and cultural practices. It follows four storylines linked by creativity\, generosity\, resistance and defiance.”\n-Phi Centre \n“As we witnessed the transformative power of this gift\, our eyes filled with tears. This kind of art cannot be measured or counted; it is priceless. It travels from heart to heart and keeps on moving.”\n-Spirituality and Practice

So when his climate skepticism gives way to a commitment to documenting the mass extinction of glaciers around the Arctic\, he’s extreme about that too. He and his team – The Extreme Ice Survey – set up time-lapse cameras on Arctic cliff faces\, then check back annually to grab the data. Year after year\, the photos they capture tell the story of a planet – our home! – warming fast; the glaciers and ice mountains retreat before our eyes. We also witness the heroic lengths Balog will go to capture this story. Brutal weather\, four knee surgeries\, extended periods away from his family: the guy won’t quit. Which is lucky for us because the photos\, and this film\, are credited by many former climate deniers as the wake-up call they needed. Beautiful\, captivating\, disturbing\, eye-opening\, Balog’s photos were captured from 2005-2009 and this film by Jeff Orlowski was released in 2012\, and yet the urgency of this story is greater than ever. \nWatch the amazing Chasing Ice trailer here!: \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZTMVNBjc4\n \n\n ABOUT THE GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE\nThis September\, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. Before the Flood\, presented by National Geographic\, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace\, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets with political leaders fighting against inaction. He also discovers a calculated disinformation campaign orchestrated by powerful special interests working to confuse the public about the urgency of the growing climate crisis. With unprecedented access to thought leaders around the world\, DiCaprio searches for hope in a rising tide of catastrophic news. \nFrom Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award®-winning actor\, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio\, Before the Flood presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change\, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent the disruption of life on our planet. Beyond the steps we can take as individuals\, the film urges viewers to push their elected officials in supporting the use of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power. “We need everyone to demand bold action from their political leaders and to elect representatives who have their best interests at heart\, not the interests of corporations to perpetuate a cycle of greed and destruction\,” says DiCaprio. “This documentary shows how interconnected the fate of all humanity is — but also the power we all possess as individuals to build a better future for our planet.” \nBefore the Flood premieres in theaters on October 21st and will air globally on the National Geographic Channel on October 30th in 171 countries and 45 languages. SUMMARY:Time is Art : Synchronicity and the Collective Dream : Film & Talk
DESCRIPTION:BLOOM VICTORIA presents: TIME IS ART : Synchronicity and the Collective Dream \nBloom Victoria is delighted to present the Canadian Premiere of TIME IS ART. This documentary explores synchronicity as a portal to a new reality; perhaps we can tap into a way of being that is not ruled by a finite sense of time\, but rather by the ability to live in harmony with the true creative nature of our existence. We will be joined by intuitive healer PENELOPE HAGAN of PENELOPE’S SPIRITUAL SERVICES\, who will discuss cultivating\, working with and grounding in synchronicity. \nSYNOPSIS\nThe documentary film follows Jennifer\, a writer who is compelled to make sense of the mysterious and powerful energy she felt at her aunt’s deathbed. A series of strange coincidences leads her on an exploration of synchronicity – the concept that everything is interconnected\, and that time is not so much a chronology as it is an infinite cycle. Considering herself something of a skeptic\, she treads the fine line between nervous breakdown and ecstatic revelation as she seeks out guides in her search for answers. Together\, they explore a reality where time is transformed from a unit that can be measured and commodified -“Time is money”- to an experience of oneness with the natural rhythms of nature and the universe. It is here that the writer discovers that time is\, in fact\, art. \n“Time is Art” is ultimately the story of an artist’s search for inspiration in a money-driven society that shuns creativity\, and of the human search for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. Presented as a cinematic meditation along the lines of Waking Life and Samsara\, this film takes an experimental approach that allows us to experience reality as Jennifer begins to see it – one less concerned with linear storytelling\, and more open to the cyclical patterns of nature\, the hidden meanings of symbols\, and the dreamlike overlapping of people\, places\, and moments. \nCompelling conversations with fellow seekers Toko-Pa Turner\, Richard Tarnas\, Amy Lansky\, Graham Hancock\, Daniel Pinchbeck and Rupert Sheldrake as well as artists and activists guide us through the underlying premise of the film: perhaps we can tap into a way of being that is not ruled by a finite sense of time\, but rather by the ability to live in harmony with the true creative nature of our existence.\nInspired by acclaimed & visionary author José Argüelles’ studies in ancient indigenous wisdom\, this film explores the idea that modern humanity is immersed in an erroneous and artificial perception of time that deviates from the natural order of the universe. We have become disconnected from the natural rhythms of the earth by focusing only on money\, consumerism and exploitation while deep down inside\, we crave the return to a foundation of culture\, community\, and creation.\nAs Jennifer navigates the labyrinth of her own light and darkness\, she opens herself to a new reality in which everyone and everything appear connected by a larger purpose. She is revealed to be part of a global movement of people challenging a linear and restrictive consciousness in exchange for one grounded in meaningful connection and action – a template for a new era where we are one with the earth and each other. \nBLOOM VICTORIA is one of 30 bioregional chapters of the Bloom Network.
