SUMMARY:Codes from the Old World
DESCRIPTION:Hidden in ancient stories are all kinds of secrets…\nabout how to thrive in a time of unraveling.\nHow do we work with such codes? How do we court them? In a time of strip-lit\, rational thinking\, how could we as modern people cultivate an etiquette of the uncanny? From his years living in a tent through to his life now\, UK mythologist Dr. Martin Shaw will weave personal experiences up through any number of stories from the very edge of the fire. \nNo evening on the Codes tour is quite the same as the last\, though each is sure to be electrifying. In the tradition of the old Celtic Seanchai\, Shaw works entirely in the moment\, with any number of tales he may produce from his crane-skin bag. It will be an uncommon gathering and filled with strange nutrients. \n  \nJOIN US FROM AROUND THE WORLD\nIN PERSON TICKETS ARE NOW SOLD OUT – but we’ve got Stream of Consciousness delivering a beautiful high-definition multicamera livestream of the whole event. Join us from wherever you are in the world\, or even just from the comfort of your couch. \nLIVESTREAM DETAILS & TICKETS HERE \n  \nABOUT MARTIN SHAW\n\nDr. Martin Shaw is a celebrated international storyteller\, mythologist\, award-winning author\, and teacher. Dr. Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. He is the author of seventeen books\, including the award-winning A Branch From The Lightning Tree\, Snowy Tower\, and Scatterlings: Getting Claimed in the Age of Amnesia. Director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK\, Shaw also devised and led the Oral Tradition course at Stanford University. His translations of Gaelic poetry and folklore (with Tony Hoagland) have been published in Orion Magazine\, Poetry International\, Kenyon Review\, Poetry Magazine\, and Mississippi Review. Current work includes The Nightingale and the Lion (a poetic rumination on the ecstasies\, secret traditions and love myths of the west)\, and Courting the Dawn: Poems of Lorca. The Irish Times call him “a Seanchai\, an interloper from the medieval\,” and Madeline Miller names him “a modern-day Bard.” \ndrmartinshaw.com \n  \nWHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID:\n“In a world that\, increasingly\, looks to set rigid boundaries around what is acceptable to think and feel\, Shaw’s work comes as relief\, like clear\, cold water from a rushing spring.”\n—The Sunday Times\, February 2023 \n“Martin Shaw’s work is so very beautiful. A new animal. His love of images is deep and contagious. In the passion of his search he makes up new words that seem as though we’ve always known them. His language is tasty and surprising. This elegant combination of very fresh\, free verse storytelling\, and a deep untangling of myth feels so alive. What will it do next?”\n—Coleman Barks\, author of The Essential Rumi \n“I can still remember the first time I heard Martin Shaw tell a story. The tale that emerged was like a living thing\, bounding around\, throwing itself at all of us there listening. I had never heard anything like it before. Martin is a one-off\, his work is urgent and necessary.”\n—Paul Kingsnorth\, author of The Wake \n“Eloquent and elegant\, Shaw offers an irresistible invitation into realms that hold the wisdom of\, not only survival\, but expanding into one’s sense of purpose.”\n—Malidoma Somé\, author of Of Water and The Spirit \n“How I love the intelligent\, poetic\, and wild way of his voice.”\n—Meredith Little\, co-author of The Way of the Vision Quest \n“A true master. Martin Shaw is one of the very greatest storytellers we have.”\n—Robert Bly\, author of Iron John \n“Martin Shaw is a conjurer\, a thirteenth century troubadour dropped in our midst. He breathes into his characters a beating pulse\, agile speech and bedazzling wit. Catch him any way you can.”\n—Eric Utne\, founder of The Utne Reader \n  \nABOUT OUR HOST\nThe School of Mythopoetics is a growing community of mythopoetic scholars\, practicing the arts of story\, myth\, ritual and wonder. \nYou might ask – what is myth·o·po·et·ics?\nThe practice and lens of using story\, poetry\, and myth to wrangle meaning for oneself and our collective journey. It’s the reawakening of the mythic imagination in modern times. \nHumanity is undergoing a great initiation right now.\nUncertainty is the increasing measure of our days. \nThe control-oriented maps of meaning fail us here.\nThese dark hollows are the terrain of soul. \nTo find our way\, we must learn to speak the soul’s language\, the mythopoetics that arise of birdsong\, of thunderstorm\, of crossroad\, of metaphor and myth. \nYour initiation will require you to court once again these wild Gods.\nThis School is a container for a regenerative cultural movement. \nwww.schoolofmythopoetics.com

SUMMARY:the Future of Children
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Children Rewirement Training\nWith Phil Moore\, Author of The Future of Children\nCo-founder of Upland Hills School & Ecological Awareness Centre \n  \nDETAILS & TICKETS HERE\n  \nA 3-Day Virtual Training for Parents\, Educators and Outliers\n*NOTE: This event is VIRTUAL ONLY – NO LIVE AUDIENCE \nBy the end of this 3-day live virtual training with Phil Moore (author of The Future of Children)\, you will have an expanded toolbox of ideas and initiatives that you can apply in your classroom\, family or community immediately\, which will provide the life skills and preparation for these children to confidently & skillfully navigate the world of the unknown. \n  \nThe Core Themes\nThe Future of Children Rewirement Training will focus on three essential themes that have been put into practice for 50+ years. All of the teachings will stem from these core themes: \nLISTENING: Learn & practice new ways to deeply listen to the children\, Earth & your internal guidance so you can better serve others.\nCONTEXT: Move from the ‘content education’ model by rewiring your world-view to become a comprehensive\, wholistic thinker.\nCOMMUNITY: Belong to a community and movement of co-hearts who are actively transforming education\, families and communities. \n  \nMeet Phil Moore\nIn a nutshell\, Phil Moore leads with his heart. He puts this extraordinary heart capacity to work by playing the infinite game. A game where there are no losers and winning means oneing.(from me to we). Where you play with the rules rather than by them. An infinite game player plays to leave an invisible legacy in the hearts and minds of others. This kind of open heart—willing to give and receive\, attracts allies and seeds possibilities. For his entire life as a teacher\, husband\, father\, Granda\, mentor\, writer and leader\, Phil has been an artist of possibilities. This artistry opens doors\, forges bonds\, spreads inspiration and astonishing learning happens for everyone in his orbit. \nLearn more about Phil and his amazing legacy here. \n  \nThe Current Education System is Obsolete\nThe children who are being born today deserve schools that nourish their unique gifts. Currently\, children are being fed a diet of toxic information\, in a factory-like setting that is diminishing their light\, while feeding their anxiety. Teachers are leaving the profession in large numbers because they know the current educational model is failing to nourish & nurture children into higher possibilities of being and becoming. \n  \nIntroducing a Love-Based Approach to Education\nWhen inspired and empowered teachers are given the ability to create innovative\, comprehensive curriculum\, based on passion\, play and place – children flourish. A Love-Based Education begins as soon as the child is seen\, heard\, honoured and cherished. Our initiatives have contributed to creating new kinds of human beings. People who love to cooperate\, collaborate\, contribute and communicate their love for the natural world and for life in general. \n  \nI take great joy in commending Phillip Moore and his Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center to you. I’m personally convinced of the competence of Moore and his associates\, of their integrity and of their realistic commitment to society.\nBuckminster Fuller\nPhilosopher\, Futurist & Teacher \n  \nUpland Hills is one of the greatest schools in the world. I’ve never seen so many turned on kids in my life\, in any school setting. Friends\, love\, learning\, care…. These kids are going to grow up to be very different adults. They are hands on\, sensory rich…. growing up to be true\, deep\, wise\, interested human beings.\nJean Houston\nOne of the Principal Founders of the Human Potential Movement \n  \nDETAILS & TICKETS HERE\n  \n  \nHear what Jean Houston has to say about Phil’s work at Upland Hills School!:\n\n

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Stories
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Gathering of Stories: The Heart of the Feminine\nOver the past centuries\, much of our human societies have come under a system of domination\, developed and controlled by uninitiated men. Men who have not been guided through a rite of passage into proper adulthood\, where they recognize their place in the great dance of life. \nWithin this trance\, what are considered “masculine qualities” (rationality\, competition\, power) have come to be the most highly prized\, and rewarded. “Feminine qualities” such as collaboration\, emotional intelligence (EQ) and compassion have been diminished as less worthy\, and have denied the expression of different kinds of power and beauty that are potent medicine needed for these times. \nJuly 2021 weaved storytellers\, musicians and poets in response to the question: what power lies within the heart of the feminine? \nThe Experience\nGuided by co-hosts Pulxaneeks & Tonye Aganaba\, the day wove a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience was invited to dive deeper with a shared conversation with the teller\, connecting around the themes and insights. \nWhat is a Gathering of Stories?\nA Gathering of Stories is a seasonal ceremony\, conducted over livestream\, bringing together renowned storytellers\, musicians and poets from around the world\, providing new insight and perspectives on the most vital themes of our time. \nEach day weaves a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience are invited to dive deeper into a shared conversation with the teller\, connecting around the themes\, insights\, and characters that naturally spill forth from this old time magic.\n  \nAccess the Replay HERE!\nTERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\n\nSunset Labs sits on the traditional\, ancestral\, unceded homelands of the Lekwungen people\, now also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We endeavour to honour this land\, its peoples and treaties by strengthening our relationship and responsibilities to them. We acknowledge and thank the Lekwungen people\, on whose land we live\, work\, create\, dance and play.\n

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Mythic Masculine | Warrior Within | Uplift | MysterySchool.tv | The Rowe Center\nProudly Present…\nA Gathering of Stories – Theme: The Soul of Masculinity\nA Gathering of Stories is a two day storytelling festival\, conducted over livestream\, bringing together renowned storytellers\, musicians and poets from around the world\, providing new insight and perspectives for tending the soul of the masculine. \nEach day will weave a tapestry of story\, punctuated by musical performances and spoken word artists. After each story\, the audience will be invited to dive deeper into a conversation with the teller and fellow attendees\, connecting around the themes\, insights\, and characters that naturally spill forth from this old time magic. \nMany would say the Masculine has been ill for some time. When we speak of men\, or the inner Masculine within us all – many are struggling under violence\, depression and addiction\, or lost in toxic power games and perpetuating ecological collapse. \nIn the era of #metoo and the scales of social justice tipping toward a much needed reckoning\, there seem to be few pathways towards a Masculine that is powerful\, nurturing\, and connected. Perhaps we might look to the old stories for guidance\, to shine light anew on modern challenges and illuminate how we might yet become?\nThis inaugural Gathering of Stories is aimed at shining a beacon of possibility and magic\, at a time when the mythic imagination must play a vital role once again. \nThe gathering is hosted by Ian MacKenzie\, founder of The Mythic Masculine Podcast and Network.\n  \nGET TICKETS HERE\n  \nA Gathering of Stories – Theme: The Soul of Masculinity will be hosted at Sunset Labs and livestreamed by Stream of Consciousness. \nPlease note\, this is a VIRTUAL ONLY event\, there will be no in-person audience.

SUMMARY:On the Cusp 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Eternal Dance of Capricorn & Aquarius Continues…\nAs we move into the 2000 year Age of Aquarius\, we together shift from the Piscean framework of hierarchy\, and power… into an Aquarian framework of information\, equality\, networks and collaboration. There’s a new time birthing\, a new way… and as we welcome the arrival of Aquarius\, in the Age of Aquarius\, in a new year with some new energies rising and old energies falling to the background… we gather to connect\, to move\, to remember what it is to have community\, to dance and celebrate and feel each other’s shared movements from near\, or far. \nWe dance for our ancestors… for our descendants… we dance as a love song to the earth\, as a gratitude poem to our feet\, as a massage for our organs… we dance because we CAN\, in a time when connection and moving energy is so vital. THANK YOU for being with us… for dancing with us… and for sharing a moment in time – in community – regardless our physical location. While it may be a moment longer before we can return to the touch we once knew\, and need… we can until then touch each other’s hearts and minds… and it’s a path well worth developing. Our next step is right here\, on the cusp of what comes next. \n♥ ♥ ♥ \n\nMUSICAL CONTRIBUTIONS FROM \nSpice Traders \nhttps://soundcloud.com/spicetradersmusic\nThe inescapable evolution of our beloved Kaminanda\, Spice Traders is the newest most beauteous creative expression of Stephen Medeiros… Colorful\, slow\, spacious House and Downtempo with a plethora of musicians trading spices. Spectral sunsets\, fractal flowers and ancient architecture roll into the night upon a Thunder Phoenix born of lightning and tonal sunbeams.\n  \nDJ Rowan \nSublime Events | Sunset Labs\nhttps://www.mixcloud.com/rowansentesy\nRowan has been DJing and promoting events in BC for over a decade sharing the stage with mainstay festival acts like Adham Shaikh\, Gaudi\, Liquid Stranger\, Ganga Giri\, Delhi 2 Dublin\, Bluetech\, Saqi\, Desert Dwellers\, David Starfire\, Drumspyder\, Random Rab and more. Rowan’s creates sonic journeys layered with exotic textures\, hypnotic rhythms and soaring\, soulful melodies. This is what he is lovingly pulled towards\, again and again.\n  \nDJ Dodd \nReturning Saturn | Sunset Labs\n https://facebook.com/TheDoddAbides/\nThe existence of Dodd has long been questioned by those who’ve not been on his dancefloor — but those who’ve been there are fast and thorough believers. From his humble beginnings as a dancefloor observer Dodd carefully catalogued the sounds and reactions of the people in order to pinpoint the perfect palette of progressive sounds. Whether you’re a believer or not\, with the speakers as his chorus\, you will be moved by the voice of Dodd…\n  \n\nTHE PARTY IS ONLINE!\nThis online party won’t be just another zoom call. We’re pullin out all the stops and this will be a beautiful\, high-definition\, multi-camera\, interactive broadcast. Get your biggest screen & sound system setup and be ready to dance the night away in the living room!\nThe coolest thing about offering a livestream for this event is that you and your friends can attend from ANYWHERE in the world with an internet connection! Through our easy online webinar system\, you can engage with other viewers. You certainly CAN choose to just sit back and watch & listen\, if you like – your active participation isn’t an expectation\, but it IS an opportunity. \nCREATE YOUR DANCE SPACE\nTake the time in advance to make your space great\, whatever that means to you. Build an altar\, light incense\, play with the lighting\, make it beautiful. Good tech helps too – connect your computer to a big external monitor so you can see us all… try to get your best speakers all set up so that the sound can move through your body. A little extra time on your personal setup can give you a vastly different experience :)) \nHELP US SPREAD THE WORD?\nAs online dance events go\, we think this one will be pretty special\, and for the enjoyment of all – as well as generating extra support for Sunset – we’d love your help in spreading the word about this event. The EASIEST way is just to hit INVITE and invite all your friends who might enjoy this night! Also\, you can engage on the event wall\, post this event to your own page.. and of course\, go old school and actually call and invite some friends :)) Thanks for any efforts here to get the word out! \nOUR GIFT TO YOU\nAs a community you’ve given so much to Sunset Labs\, THANK YOU. DESCRIPTION:  \n>>> ♥ D A N C E L A B S ♥ <<<\nWe need more dance! And GREAT music!\nAnd we’re missing our connection\, and our festivals\, and our touring superstar producers and artists! \nI reached out to some friends and asked if they would contribute a LIVE set to a Sunset benefit event\, and a bit to my surprise\, they ALL said YES – and their schedules all aligned for ONE date – JULY 17! I’m so grateful and humbled by the generosity of our amazing community – deep bows to Dakini\, Drumspyder\, Desert Dwellers\, SaQi and Mihirangi for their interest in lifting our little Victoria venue and dance tribe here. \nWe can’t call this a festival… but have you ever seen these 5 acts on the same lineup in the same evening?! This is awesome badass blessed bonkers music madness. \nThis virtual party is going to be the BEST. We are using professional livestream and audio gear to manage the broadcast\, working closely with artists to support their LIVE delivery into the event\, and we have some very fun additional elements we’ll be weaving in to make our evening together all the better. Hope you can join us :))\n \n \nGET TICKETS \n  \n\nWHY A FUNDRAISER?\nRight now\, there’s so many people and purposes that need our support. We don’t have to look far to find people\, causes and organizations who really need some extra care\, attention\, resources and support. So… asking for your help in this moment feels imperfect\, and that said\, Sunset needs some help. \nThis unusual moment has been really impactful on Sunset Labs (and venues everywhere!). With plenty of 2020 bookings in the calendar\, we went ‘all in’ on a renovation December-January… and made a number of huge changes at the venue. An end-to-end paint job… upgrades to lighting\, sound\, seating\, power\, airflow… new floors\, new ceilings\, a new mini-stage… so much. It’s the most dramatic overhaul in the venue’s history\, and since COVID landed just after we re-opened… very few people have seen it. But it’s great\, you’ll love it. We love it. \nEconomically\, Sunset Labs has long been effectively a breakeven scenario. There’s very little money in arts\, kids birthdays\, film screenings\, non-profit programs\, dance culture\, and workshops (yes there’s money in alcohol\, but we’re not interested in being licensed). We’ve never really designed or intended Sunset Labs to make a bunch of money… just to make a bunch of difference for our guests and community – a fun\, safe\, creative\, lifting community space that advances people and projects that matter\, and we feel really good about what we’ve been up to\, in these last few years in particular. \nSo\, now to THIS moment. On the heels of our big renovation & upgrades with Sunset already low on resources suddenly COVID hit. All the spring/summer bookings were cancelled and we’ve been offering future credits and returning deposits. We’ve now been months without income and as far as we and other venue owners can tell… there’s no aid in place for venues provincially or federally\, and no end in sight to serious constraints on our operations. We need to create some resources now. Thanks for whatever support you can bring to help Sunset catch up and pivot to this unusual moment. \n  \n\nOUR ARTISTS & CONTRIBUTORS\nMIHIRANGI | New Zealand\nreverbnation.com/mihirangi/ \nSaQi | Jumpsuit Records\, USA\nhttps://www.saqimusic.com/ \nDRUMSPYDER | Bay Area\, USA\nhttps://www.drumspyder.com/ \nDAKINI | Bay Area\, USA\nhttps://www.facebook.com/DjDakini/ \nDESERT DWELLERS | Colorado\, USA\nhttps://desertdwellersmusic.bandcamp.com/ \nlive art by KASHI INNANI\nkashivisionaryart.com \nvisuals by JOHNATHAN SINGER\nhttp://johnathansinger.com/ \n  \n\nTHE PARTY IS ONLINE!\nThis online party won’t be just another zoom call. SUMMARY:GIFT Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the breathtaking and richly cinematic documentary THE GIFT\, followed by a Q&A session with award winning Filmmaker Robin McKenna\, who will be joining us LIVE via Skype to answer your questions. \n“Robin McKenna’s elliptical\, poetic\, and visually arresting “Gift” examines the radical concept that creativity is not a commodity to be sold but a blessing to be shared.”\n-Peter Keogh\, The Boston Globe \nWATCH THE TRAILER: \n \nGIFT-Trailer from Gaudete Films on Vimeo. \n\nEVENT DETAILS:\nDoors: 6:30pm\nFilm: 7pm-8:30pm\nQ&A w Director: 8:30-9:00pm\nPrice: Pay What Feels Good\nTickets available at the door. \n\nABOUT THE GIFT\nInspired by Lewis Hyde’s beloved classic The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World\, GIFT is a richly cinematic film\, interweaving character-driven stories. On North America’s Pacific Northwest Coast\, a young Indigenous man undertakes the elaborate preparations for a potlatch—to make a name for himself by giving everything away. In Rome\, Italy\, a factory occupied by migrant families is transformed into a living museum\, protected by a “barricade of art”: a model of resistance\, and an invaluable gift. In the pirate utopia of Burning Man\, a mutant bumblebee art car distributes honey in a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. Meanwhile\, in Auckland\, New Zealand\, artist Mingwei Lee prepares to launch Sonic Blossom – a “transformative gift” of song. GIFT is a tribute to something that can’t be measured or counted\, bought or sold. Exploring the parallels between artists’ work and a gift economy\, it’s a reflection on the creative process\, the reasons we “labour in service of our gifts”\, and a celebration of the imagination. \nABOUT ROBIN MCKENNA \nRobin McKenna began making films with La Course destination monde. Her film\, The Great War Experience won Yorkton Film Festival’s Founders’ Award in 2007. Her cinematography credits include City of Borders (Berlinale\, HotDocs 2008) and The Take with Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis (AFI Best Documentary\, 2004). She is an alumnus of Hot Docs Doc Lab\, and has been a filmmaker-mentor with Wapikoni Mobile. GIFT is Robin’s first feature documentary. Currently\, she is direction a short film with the National Film Board for the Governor General’s Award for the Performing Arts and finishing Thanadoula\, a short documentary fairytale about a girl’s search for her older sister and the “crow magic” connecting them. She is a producer/co-director of Medicine\, a feature documentary in post-production about ayahuasca\, medicine and healing. \n\nPRAISE FOR THE GIFT! \n“Thank you for this magisterial film\, subtle as it is on the revolutionary nature of art and the power forged when we honor our gifts and give them away. A dream\, a meditation\, a call to action.\n-Terry Tempest Williams\, author & environmentalist \n“At a time when art is relentlessly commercialized and commodified\, Robin McKenna’s “Gift” provides a gentle and welcome reminder of other values.”\n-A.O. Scott\, The New York Times \n“A beautiful\, moving\, and thought-provoking reflection on the creative process and the things that make us human.”\n-Jonathan Lethem\, novelist \n“GIFT presents us with a rare opportunity to escape the relentless logic of the market and to reclaim a little bit of our human freedom.”\n-Le Devoir \n“GIFT is a poetic outlook on gift economies through art and cultural practices. It follows four storylines linked by creativity\, generosity\, resistance and defiance.”\n-Phi Centre \n“As we witnessed the transformative power of this gift\, our eyes filled with tears. This kind of art cannot be measured or counted; it is priceless. It travels from heart to heart and keeps on moving.”\n-Spirituality and Practice

SUMMARY:Birthing the Urban Village
DESCRIPTION:Want to help birth the urban village?\nIt’s a time of social\, political\, economic\, cultural and environmental meltdowns\, and we need to regenerate ecosystems on a large scale — including and in particular the ecosystems of our cities! The urban environment is part of nature\, both impacted by the landscape around it and with profound effects on surrounding lands and waters\, as well as on the lives of their inhabitants. \nWith 68% of global population projected to be living in urban centres by 2050\, our cities are the global engines of culture\, creativity and economic innovation\, yet they are also often cold\, alienating and unsustainable. Can we bring the warmth and deep relatedness of the village to the urban streets\, and still keep the excitement and magic of urban living\, all while bringing our world back into balance with the nature that surrounds us? \nHow can we regenerate our cities\, our human ecosytems\, economies\, social interactions\, and human nature? How can we do so with an emphasis on culture building being core to our being\, not allowing ourselves to be thrown off of our core integrity and purpose\, while we also have to respond to what is throwing the world out of balance? This is the way to keep becoming stronger\, more connected with each other\, more resilient as our love for each other and the world grows more dear and fierce. \nJoin us IN PERSON or ONLINE for this panel presentation and community dialogue featuring an array of the west coast’s leading changemakers! \n  \n\nOUR PANELISTS:\nSTARHAWK | www.starhawk.org\nStarhawk is an author\, activist\, permaculture designer and teacher\, and a prominent voice in modern earth-based spirituality and ecofeminism. She travels internationally\, lecturing and teaching on earth-based spirituality\, the tools of ritual\, and the skills of activism. \nMARK LAKEMAN | www.cityrepair.org\nMark always gets out of bed in the morning excited to take down the patriarchy by repairing cities. He sees placemaking as restorative work\, reacquainting people with how many complex dimensions of urban life can rejoin and then become simple together. Mark loves watching people create together and enact ecological and community repair as a way of finding their power. Mark loves building\, designing\, drawing\, helping\, using his hands in a zillion creative ways. He also loves being a son\, brother\, dad\, husband\, a friend\, and an old growth activist. \nBRANDY GALLAGHER | www.ourecovillage.org\nBrandy has worked in Community Development circles for the past 24 years with a focus of ‘recreating the commons’ and having alternative economy as a basis within trade/barter\, gift economy and service to the common good. Her work includes mobilizing tens of thousands of peoples to work together towards a seemingly impossible vision to rebecoming villagers\, urban or rural\, in a way that regenerates land and attempts to protect our collective future for generations to come. \nModerated By:\nMAYOR LISA HELPS | www.lisahelpsvictoria.ca\nLisa Helps became the 52nd Mayor of Victoria when she was elected on November 15\, 2014\, and was sworn into office for her second term on November 1\, 2018. SUMMARY:Raincoast Conservation Foundation
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Future of Killer Whale Recovery\nWith the Southern Resident population now at only 75 individuals\, their survival is clearly threatened under current conditions. Additional noise from vessel traffic\, further reductions in food availability\, or random events such as disease and oil spills would significantly increase their risk of extinction. Our research has helped to outline the viability of this population\, given existing threats and those on the horizon. The same research also outlines that we can put them on a path to recovery if we take necessary action. \nHosted by Bob McDonald\, host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks\, this evening will discuss possibilities for recovery of critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. \nFrom fisheries closures and feeding refuges free from fishing and whale watching\, to closure of marine commercial and recreational fisheries and noise reductions from commercial vessels\, recovery measures are controversial. \nEXPERT PANELISTS\nMisty MacDuffee: Wild Salmon Program Director\, Raincoast Conservation Foundation \nMisty has been working on salmon conservation as a biologist for over 20 years. For more than a decade she has led Raincoast’s efforts to protect to protect the Southern Residents. As well as a publishing critical research on both wild salmon and killer whales\, Misty works with government and industry on fisheries reform and sits on various technical committees focused on wild salmon and killer whale conservation. \nDr. Peter S. Ross: Vice-President of Research at Ocean Wise\nPeter currently oversees eight research programs at Ocean Wise that deliver conservation science to the international community. He is Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. He served as a Research Scientist with the Canadian government between 1996 and 2013. He is an international authority in the area of ocean pollution\, having published over 150 scientific articles\, with a focus on the source\, transport\, fate and effects of priority pollutants. He discovered the region’s killer whales to be the most ‘contaminated marine mammals in the world’ in a groundbreaking study in the year 2000\, and more recently reported on the widespread distribution of microplastics in the NE Pacific Ocean. \nMichael Jasny: Director of Marine Mammal Protection\, Natural Resources Defence Council\nMichael is a widely published expert on the law and policy of ocean noise pollution. For over ten years\, he has directed high-profile litigation\, lobbying efforts\, science-based policy development\, and public advocacy to improve the regulation of this emergent global problem. His work also focuses on securing protection for endangered marine mammals and their habitat\, opposing development projects that threaten marine mammals off the U.S. and Canadian coastlines\, and improving management of fisheries\, whale-watching tourism\, and other sectors that impact these vulnerable species. \nGET YOUR IN PERSON TICKET TO THIS EVENT HERE! \n  \nCAN’T MAKE IT IN PERSON?
