And GREAT music!\nAnd we’re missing our connection\, and our festivals\, and our touring superstar producers and artists! \nI reached out to some friends and asked if they would contribute a LIVE set to a Sunset benefit event\, and a bit to my surprise\, they ALL said YES – and their schedules all aligned for ONE date – JULY 17! I’m so grateful and humbled by the generosity of our amazing community – deep bows to Dakini\, Drumspyder\, Desert Dwellers\, SaQi and Mihirangi for their interest in lifting our little Victoria venue and dance tribe here. \nWe can’t call this a festival… but have you ever seen these 5 acts on the same lineup in the same evening?! This is awesome badass blessed bonkers music madness. \nThis virtual party is going to be the BEST. We are using professional livestream and audio gear to manage the broadcast\, working closely with artists to support their LIVE delivery into the event\, and we have some very fun additional elements we’ll be weaving in to make our evening together all the better. We don’t have to look far to find people\, causes and organizations who really need some extra care\, attention\, resources and support. So… asking for your help in this moment feels imperfect\, and that said\, Sunset needs some help. \nThis unusual moment has been really impactful on Sunset Labs (and venues everywhere!). With plenty of 2020 bookings in the calendar\, we went ‘all in’ on a renovation December-January… and made a number of huge changes at the venue. An end-to-end paint job… upgrades to lighting\, sound\, seating\, power\, airflow… new floors\, new ceilings\, a new mini-stage… so much. It’s the most dramatic overhaul in the venue’s history\, and since COVID landed just after we re-opened… very few people have seen it. But it’s great\, you’ll love it. We love it. \nEconomically\, Sunset Labs has long been effectively a breakeven scenario. There’s very little money in arts\, kids birthdays\, film screenings\, non-profit programs\, dance culture\, and workshops (yes there’s money in alcohol\, but we’re not interested in being licensed). We’ve never really designed or intended Sunset Labs to make a bunch of money… just to make a bunch of difference for our guests and community – a fun\, safe\, creative\, lifting community space that advances people and projects that matter\, and we feel really good about what we’ve been up to\, in these last few years in particular. \nSo\, now to THIS moment. On the heels of our big renovation & upgrades with Sunset already low on resources suddenly COVID hit. All the spring/summer bookings were cancelled and we’ve been offering future credits and returning deposits. We’ve now been months without income and as far as we and other venue owners can tell… there’s no aid in place for venues provincially or federally\, and no end in sight to serious constraints on our operations. We need to create some resources now. Why YES\, why YES you can. :)))  \nSO… we’re throwing a short-notice Canada Day Tragically Hip patio party! DESCRIPTION:PRESERVATION HAUL\nAn Arts Victoria Launch & Celebration \n\nWe’re so excited to invite you to a special event designed BY and FOR our amazing arts community!  \nYou may not yet be familiar with The Victoria Arts Promotion and Preservation Society\, but you likely know our work. “VAPPS” is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to increase access to Victoria’s artistic output; both today and for future generations. \nWe’ve now guided ArtsVictoria.ca for 6 years\, and are now taking over full ownership of the site from the City of Victoria. At the same time\, LiveVictoria.com and its 20 years of history in the community are also being turned over and entrusted to VAPPS. The two sites will together form Victoria’s most diverse\, comprehensive and dynamic cultural calendar\, arts hub and living archive – ALL completely artist-led and community owned. \n\nTHE CELEBRATION \nTo celebrate this occasion we want to gather our communities under one roof. Join us at Sunset Labs at 7pm for music\, libations\, and conversations. DESCRIPTION:Starry Starry Skies second annual ‘Original Works’ showcase will focus on all original musical theater\, written by our own creative team. You’re Single’\, ‘I Stand Accused’\, ‘Una & Mirren’\, ‘In The First Degree’\, ‘The Sirens’\, and ‘Little Bird’. As an audience member\, you get to vote and see what musical you would like to see us produce in 2021! \n‘Poof! You’re Single’  is a modern tale of dating and romance surrounding four young women trying to figure out life and love after High school\, featuring the songs ‘We Were Facebook Official’\, ‘Are We On A Break?’\, and ‘Did it Hurt?’ \n ‘I Stand Accused’ takes place in the regency era\, where a land owning family\, that operates a farm\, is uprooted when a wealthy cad comes on the scene. Featuring the songs ‘Grenholm’s Soliloquy’\, ‘Whatever Comes My Way’\, and ‘I Don’t Know the Words’. \n‘Una & Mirren’  a musical set during the Scottish rebellion of King Edward’s reign\, features the songs: ‘We Will Win Today’\, ‘Here is the Answer’\, and ‘Our Eternity’. \n‘In the First Degree’ is a private detective story set in the late 1940s as a female PI becomes involved in solving the cases of several grisly murders. Featuring the songs: ‘1st Crime Scene’\, ‘You’ll Feel Me’\, and ‘Detective Theories’. \n‘The Sirens’  is about a girl group in the 1990s making their way into stardom\, and all the pitfalls they face along the way. Featuring the songs ‘The One I Love the Most’\, ‘Superwoman’\, and ‘Going Solo’. \nThe last musical selection will be produced in March of 2020 by the company. ‘Little Bird’ is set in 1969\, as a young woman named Robin runs away from home and follows her dream of being a songwriter in London. DESCRIPTION:‘Once More with Feeling’ An Unlicensed Buffie The Vampyre Slayer Parody”\, is a reimagining of the classic episode\, originally written by Joss Whedon.  \nThe episode is watched\, alongside the audience\, by an alien being known as ‘Zence’\, who possesses a remote control\, capable of starting and stopping the story on their own personal whim. Inside the episode\, as in the original\, the town of Sunnydale plays host to a capricious demon\, who sets about forcing the residents of the town to expose their secrets through musical theatre. Buffy Summers and her friends (Xander\, Willow\, Giles\, and the rest of the gang) must figure out a way to defeat the stylish singing and dancing demon. A loving homage to and parody of a classic TV episode\, the show runs 2 hours (including intermission) of musical theatre\, fun\, and drinks at Sunset Labs here in Victoria\, BC.
