SUMMARY:The Beatin' Stick: Old European Thoughts on Restorative Justice
DESCRIPTION:How do we deal with harm and hurt in our communities?\nThis seems to be a question on many of our minds these days. \nOr you’ve seen it in the broader culture around you and certainly on Facebook – the divisiveness\, the polarization\, the meanness and the piling on. And this is amongst ‘the good guys’. It’s easy to lose hope that we’ll ever get anywhere. \nIgnoring it doesn’t work. \nBut many have begun to wonder if the call outs and cancellings\, the shamings and shunnings work any better in the end. Much of it feels ‘off’ somehow but there’s a fear of voicing this lest we are next. \nAt the heart of this fear that so many live with is a sort of cultural worshiping at the altar or the one true god of punitive justice – justice by punishment. The contagion of this seems to have been blown by the growing winds of our time to the left and to the right equally. \nBut there is another form of justice – deeply rooted in many traditional cultures from around the world. It is often spoken of as restorative justice or transformative justice. It’s an approach to dealing with the very real troubles and travails\, harms and harrowings that happen in our homes and communities that centers the healing and wholeness of the community. \nIn this evening\, you’ll be hearing an old Scottish Traveler’s tale ‘The Beatin’ Stick’ which will act\, if all goes well\, as a hospitable host to welcome us in and sit us down by the hearth and help us see something of what might be done about the madness and manias that\, so often\, tear our communities apart. Other stories likely to appear are ‘The King’s Foal’ and ‘The King’s Lamp’. \n\nPRICE: \nBy Donation at the End. $25 recommended. 100% of proceeds will be going to the Raven Trust whose mission it is to raise legal defense funds to assist Indigenous Peoples who enforce their rights and title to protect or restore their traditional territories. \n\nAbout Tad Hargrave:\nFor over a decade\, Tad has found himself drawn to conversations about how we might tend to the harm that’s done in communities in ways that leave the community stronger and more whole at the end – not more shattered. \nBetween Sept 2004 – Feb 2006\, Tad dedicated himself to learning his ancestral language\, Scottish Gaelic\, in both Nova Scotia and Scotland. He can speak Gaelic with conversational fluency. He also runs a blog called Healing from Whiteness as well as a Facebook group of the same name. He is a co-founder of the Nova Scotia Gael’s Jam and co-starred in Canada’s second Gaelic language film The Fiddler’s Reel. \nHe does improv comedy semi-professionally\, co-runs Edmonton’s progressive community building network TheLocalGood.ca\, founded streetcarshows.com\, indigodrinks.ca\, socialyogiyeg.com\, and the Jams program of yesworld.org. He speaks Scottish Gaelic and helps to run novascotiagaelsjam.com and is also a huge Doctor Who nerd. \nTad currently lives in Edmonton\, Alberta (traditionally known\, in the local indigenous language of the Cree\, as Amiskwaciy (Beaver Hill) and later Amiskwaciwaskihegan (Beaver Hill House) and his ancestors come primarily from Scotland with some from the Ukraine as well. He is drawn to conversations around politics\, history\, ancestry\, healing and how those all intersect.

SUMMARY:Chasing Ice Screening
DESCRIPTION:NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL \nPresented by Sunset Labs\, Be Love\, Surfrider & Dogwood \nYoung people are calling on adults around the world to join them this September to disrupt business as usual and support the Global Climate Strike on September 27. Ahead of the strike\, Sunset Labs\, Be Love\, Surfrider and Dogwood are bringing folks together to connect and learn how we can support the incredible young people who are leading the charge on climate action. \nCome and see an important and beautiful film that cuts to the core of why urgent climate action is so important\, and hear directly from one of the local youth strike organizers\, who will share what’s being planned and how businesses can get involved and show their support. \nTicket proceeds support youth climate strike organizers in Victoria. If you’re of limited means right now and wish to attend\, please reach out – money isn’t a barrier to your participation. \n6:30PM – DOORS\n7:00PM – WELCOME & FILM\n8:30PM – DISCUSSION\n9:00PM – COMPLETE! ♥ \nGET TICKETS HERE\n\nABOUT THE FILM\nAcclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog is an extreme person. So when his climate skepticism gives way to a commitment to documenting the mass extinction of glaciers around the Arctic\, he’s extreme about that too. He and his team – The Extreme Ice Survey – set up time-lapse cameras on Arctic cliff faces\, then check back annually to grab the data. Year after year\, the photos they capture tell the story of a planet – our home! – warming fast; the glaciers and ice mountains retreat before our eyes. We also witness the heroic lengths Balog will go to capture this story. Brutal weather\, four knee surgeries\, extended periods away from his family: the guy won’t quit. Which is lucky for us because the photos\, and this film\, are credited by many former climate deniers as the wake-up call they needed. Beautiful\, captivating\, disturbing\, eye-opening\, Balog’s photos were captured from 2005-2009 and this film by Jeff Orlowski was released in 2012\, and yet the urgency of this story is greater than ever. \nWatch the amazing Chasing Ice trailer here!: \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZTMVNBjc4\n \n\n ABOUT THE GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE\nThis September\, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone. \nWe hope you’ll participate in this movement in whatever way resonates with you. SUMMARY:Birthing the Urban Village
DESCRIPTION:Want to help birth the urban village?\nIt’s a time of social\, political\, economic\, cultural and environmental meltdowns\, and we need to regenerate ecosystems on a large scale — including and in particular the ecosystems of our cities! The urban environment is part of nature\, both impacted by the landscape around it and with profound effects on surrounding lands and waters\, as well as on the lives of their inhabitants. \nWith 68% of global population projected to be living in urban centres by 2050\, our cities are the global engines of culture\, creativity and economic innovation\, yet they are also often cold\, alienating and unsustainable. Can we bring the warmth and deep relatedness of the village to the urban streets\, and still keep the excitement and magic of urban living\, all while bringing our world back into balance with the nature that surrounds us? \nHow can we regenerate our cities\, our human ecosytems\, economies\, social interactions\, and human nature? How can we do so with an emphasis on culture building being core to our being\, not allowing ourselves to be thrown off of our core integrity and purpose\, while we also have to respond to what is throwing the world out of balance? This is the way to keep becoming stronger\, more connected with each other\, more resilient as our love for each other and the world grows more dear and fierce. \nJoin us IN PERSON or ONLINE for this panel presentation and community dialogue featuring an array of the west coast’s leading changemakers! \n  \n\nOUR PANELISTS:\nSTARHAWK | www.starhawk.org\nStarhawk is an author\, activist\, permaculture designer and teacher\, and a prominent voice in modern earth-based spirituality and ecofeminism. She is the author or co-author of thirteen books\, including The Spiral Dance\, The Fifth Sacred Thing and City of Refuge. Starhawk founded Earth Activist Training\, teaching permaculture design grounded in spirituality and with a focus on activism. She travels internationally\, lecturing and teaching on earth-based spirituality\, the tools of ritual\, and the skills of activism. \nMARK LAKEMAN | www.cityrepair.org\nMark always gets out of bed in the morning excited to take down the patriarchy by repairing cities. He sees placemaking as restorative work\, reacquainting people with how many complex dimensions of urban life can rejoin and then become simple together. Mark loves watching people create together and enact ecological and community repair as a way of finding their power. Mark loves building\, designing\, drawing\, helping\, using his hands in a zillion creative ways. He also loves being a son\, brother\, dad\, husband\, a friend\, and an old growth activist. \nBRANDY GALLAGHER | www.ourecovillage.org\nBrandy has worked in Community Development circles for the past 24 years with a focus of ‘recreating the commons’ and having alternative economy as a basis within trade/barter\, gift economy and service to the common good. Her work includes mobilizing tens of thousands of peoples to work together towards a seemingly impossible vision to rebecoming villagers\, urban or rural\, in a way that regenerates land and attempts to protect our collective future for generations to come. \nModerated By:\nMAYOR LISA HELPS | www.lisahelpsvictoria.ca\nLisa Helps became the 52nd Mayor of Victoria when she was elected on November 15\, 2014\, and was sworn into office for her second term on November 1\, 2018. Mayor Helps works hard at City Hall and in the community to ensure that the city is prosperous\, affordable\, sustainable\, and ready for the future. Taking a long-term\, big-picture perspective\, she looks both around the city and around the world for innovative solutions to the pressing challenges facing us including climate change\, lack of affordable housing\, and growing social isolation and loneliness\, especially among youth and seniors. She’s honoured to have been elected as Mayor of Victoria and to serve her community in this capacity. \n  \n\nTWO WAYS TO PARTICIPATE!:\nJoin us in person at Sunset Labs!\n400 Herald Street\, Victoria (behind Value Village)\nSliding Scale – $10-$30\, you choose\nLimited seating so RSVP is required. \n\n\n \n\n\nSliding Scale – You Choose!\n\n\nOption 1 – $30.00 CADOption 2 – $20.00 CADOption 3 – $10.00 CAD \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us online via Stream of Consciousness!\nCan’t join us in person?\nWe’ll be hosting a digital ticket of this event via Stream of Consciousness.\nLivestream tickets & details are here! \n♥

Reinterpreting his signature production style anew\, 2018 saw the release of two full-lengths charting the territories between deep space experimentalism\, intricate polyrhythms\, delicate soundscapes\, evocative acid\, and hypnotic dub elements. \nThe breadth of Noah’s sonic worldview can most easily be accessed through his monthly two-hour podcast\, IFS. Each episode reveals the depth of his technical approach\, the sensibility of a seasoned selector\, and the pedigree of a late-night veteran. A two-time Juno Award nominee in his native Canada\, a music educator and technologist in his adopted hometown Berlin\, an alum of Cynosure\, Highgrade\, and Trapez LTD\, and founder of the acclaimed Thoughtless imprint\, Noah is also a DJ whose past residencies at Stereobar in Montreal and Fukhouse in Toronto helped lay the framework for his dynamic yet fluid sets that continue to resonate with diverse communities. \nA notable newcomer in Canada’s underground scene of the early 2000s\, Pred’s distinctive production style earned him a place among his peers with releases on Immigrant\, Intrinsic Design\, and Consigned Recordings. Driven by the fuel that fired up Thoughtless\, Noah relocated to Berlin in 2011\, where his creative horizons continued to expand via collaborative projects with Tom Clark as False Image on Get Physical\, with Pablo Bolivar on Apparel and Biotop\, with Tim Xavier on Alphahouse\, and with Deepchild as Concubine. \nBetween his recent solo EPs for Traumraum\, Compute\, and Biotop\, his vivid sets of techno\, house\, and electro\, the advanced sound design of his haunting atmospherics\, and the ever-evolving scope of his technical capabilities\, Noah’s commitment to electronic innovation remains as strong as ever – and in the face of global uncertainty\, his utopian sonic narratives have never felt so vital. \nhttp://noahpred.com/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/noahpred.official\nhttps://soundcloud.com/noahpred \n————————— \nROWAN \nSublime Productions \nRowan has been DJing and promoting events in BC for over a decade sharing the stage with mainstay festival acts like Adham Shaikh\, Gaudi\, Liquid Stranger\, Ganga Giri\, Delhi 2 Dublin\, Bluetech\, Saqi\, Desert Dwellers\, David Starfire\, Drumspyder\, Random Rab and more. SUMMARY:Consent Matters
DESCRIPTION:  \nWHAT IS CONSENT?\nConsent is a coherent mutual physical\, spiritual\, emotional\, & verbal agreement made without any coercion between people. The truth is\, we are all practicing consent in our daily lives\, in almost every moment: \n  \n“You have something in your hair\, can I get it out for you?”\n“Would you like a glass of water?”\n“Do you need a ride to the store? I would love to drive!”\n“Do you want a hug?” \n  \nConsent is just a broad term that encompasses willing agreements between people to engage in any given activity. Consent is a crucial ingredient in all healthy interactions and relationships. Through practicing consent\, you can understand someones desires and needs as well as communicate your own. \nOver the past couple of years\, we have started emphasizing the importance of interpersonal & intimate consent more than ever before in western history. But what often gets left out of these discussions is how exactly you go about the business of obtaining and providing consent in real-life situations. \nWe’re very excited to offer this two-part afternoon to support our whole community in evolving our collective consent language and integration\, allowing us to build more safety\, trust and connection at events\, on dance floors\, on a date… perhaps even in the bedroom. 🙂 \n  \nPART 1: #ConsentMatters 101\n1:00PM-2:30PM | Pay What You Can\nCome learn the nuances of what enthusiastic consent is through this interactive workshop. Consent on the dance floor all the way to a long term relationship: What does healthy consent feel like? Learn skills\, tools\, and resources on how to create a safer space. \n  \nWHY THIS MATTERS?\n\nConsent Matters because it can not only lessen harm done to each other\, it can provide you with more connection and pleasure in your life. \nWHAT WE’LL TEACH YOU: \nWe will teach you the nuances of enthusiastic consent. Looking at how you cultivate meaningful connections and practice communication needed to support those connections. Delving into ways we can identify desire within ourselves and others. \nWHERE MIGHT YOU USE THIS?\nYou can use this in your life\, both personally and community focused. This can empower your friendships\, romantic partnerships\, safer spaces at events\, and even shift your workplace into a healthier environment. \nWHO IS THIS FOR? \nThis is for anyone who wants more connection and pleasure in their life. This is for people who want to grow out of the normal society treatment of each other\, and be more excited to be your genuine self. \n  \nWHO IS TANILLE?\n\nTanille Geib is a Lover of Humans\, and the facilitator of our workshops! SUMMARY:Raincoast Conservation Foundation
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Future of Killer Whale Recovery\nWith the Southern Resident population now at only 75 individuals\, their survival is clearly threatened under current conditions. Additional noise from vessel traffic\, further reductions in food availability\, or random events such as disease and oil spills would significantly increase their risk of extinction. Our research has helped to outline the viability of this population\, given existing threats and those on the horizon. The same research also outlines that we can put them on a path to recovery if we take necessary action. \nHosted by Bob McDonald\, host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks\, this evening will discuss possibilities for recovery of critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. \nFrom fisheries closures and feeding refuges free from fishing and whale watching\, to closure of marine commercial and recreational fisheries and noise reductions from commercial vessels\, recovery measures are controversial. \nEXPERT PANELISTS\nMisty MacDuffee: Wild Salmon Program Director\, Raincoast Conservation Foundation \nMisty has been working on salmon conservation as a biologist for over 20 years. For more than a decade she has led Raincoast’s efforts to protect to protect the Southern Residents. As well as a publishing critical research on both wild salmon and killer whales\, Misty works with government and industry on fisheries reform and sits on various technical committees focused on wild salmon and killer whale conservation. \nDr. Peter S. Ross: Vice-President of Research at Ocean Wise\nPeter currently oversees eight research programs at Ocean Wise that deliver conservation science to the international community. He is Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. He served as a Research Scientist with the Canadian government between 1996 and 2013. He is an international authority in the area of ocean pollution\, having published over 150 scientific articles\, with a focus on the source\, transport\, fate and effects of priority pollutants. He discovered the region’s killer whales to be the most ‘contaminated marine mammals in the world’ in a groundbreaking study in the year 2000\, and more recently reported on the widespread distribution of microplastics in the NE Pacific Ocean. \nMichael Jasny: Director of Marine Mammal Protection\, Natural Resources Defence Council\nMichael is a widely published expert on the law and policy of ocean noise pollution. For over ten years\, he has directed high-profile litigation\, lobbying efforts\, science-based policy development\, and public advocacy to improve the regulation of this emergent global problem. His work also focuses on securing protection for endangered marine mammals and their habitat\, opposing development projects that threaten marine mammals off the U.S. and Canadian coastlines\, and improving management of fisheries\, whale-watching tourism\, and other sectors that impact these vulnerable species. \nGET YOUR IN PERSON TICKET TO THIS EVENT HERE! \n  \nCAN’T MAKE IT IN PERSON?
