SUMMARY:The Future of Our Food
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of sharing stories directly from the teachers\, parents\, and students impacted from their involvement in the Farm Education Program offered by Growing Young Farmers Society (GYFS). \nGYFS brings organic farming education right into school gardens all around Victoria and the Capital Region to rekindle organic farm knowledge in the youth of today and increase the number of farmers and available local organic food in our region. \nFarm Education in schools is playing a critical role in building long term food security and food quality for the present and future of Southern Vancouver Island. With a dwindling of local farming in recent generations\, come learn how your school can become part of this program that has so many benefits far beyond the act of farming. \nJoshua Wagler of Edible Landscapes Design\, a local edible landscaping design firm who works closely with Growing Young Farmers\, will be our host\, guiding our evening through the powerful stories of food and farm education. \nDoors open at 6 pm\nLIVESTREAM starts at 6:30 pm. \nABOUT OUR HOST\, JOSHUA WAGLER: \nJoshua is passionate about bringing the wisdom of Nature into human development. He has travelled the world studying Globalization and Sustainability of Cities\, and graduated with an Urban Studies Degree from the University of Calgary in 2010. Upon returning to Canada\, he began seeking practical solutions to the challenges he witnessed in the mega-cities of Pacific Asia. \nThis quest lead him on a solo pilgrimage into the Rocky Mountains\, and eventually back into the city\, where he began studying permaculture design\, food forestry\, and urban placemaking. Here he learned and worked alongside experts in these fields\, including Mark Lakeman\, Richard Walker\, Javan Bernakevitch\, and Brandon Bauer. Upon completing a business development course with Ethos Career Management Group\, he spearheaded the corporate launch of Edible Landscapes Design Ltd with Nick Poeta and Marc DeMontigny. \nSince then he has co-created numerous edible forest gardens\, workshops\, and educational events. He thrives in teaching\, sharing the magic of food forestry\, artistic design\, and bridging the needs of diverse interest groups. We combine theoretical teaching in the classroom\, with hands on practical learning in gardens located on school grounds or nearby. Our program emphasizes the importance of local\, organic\, sustainable food sources and teaches children and youth how to grow healthy produce – and encourages them to share their knowledge with their families and community. In addition to our in-school program\, GYFS also runs summer camps! \nWHY WE DO IT\nThe lessons we teach address a variety of issues concerning all of us today. As parents\, we talk about healthy eating to our children\, but do they really understand what that even means? Drawing inspiration primarily from Celtic and south European modalities\, his music combines energetic rhythms with a sensual pagan atmosphere. \nOriginating in San Francisco’s crucible of bellydance\, bass culture\, and world music fusion\, Drumspyder has come into his own as an original producer\, building a substantial catalog of work on the Caravan\, Dakini\, and Desert Trax labels and releasing two EPs of original music in 2015. He is a prolific remixer\, lending his signature live percussion and melodic touch to the Desert Dwellers\, Deya Dova\, David Starfire\, and various traditional Arabic ensembles\, with many more on the way. He contributes to Canadas electronic music community by producing\, DJing\, promoting and teaching electronic music production. \nSergio got his start in dance music in Calgary\, Alberta. Under the moniker Piranha Piranha he collaborated with long time friend and business partner Dan Solo\, producing music and initiating the forward-thinking brand therinseout. They contributed to the growing foundation of the west coast underground scene by championing weekly parties as well as other one-offs and experimental events. Modern Math\, which started as a weekly night between 2009-2011\, was a catalyst to a particularly lively period in Calgary’s musical upbringing\, and has since morphed into a series of events\, record releases and short run prints\, curated by Dan and Sandro in collaboration.Another long-running event was Northern Lights\, which happened every Wednesday for 4 1/2 years at Calgarys premier dance spot\, The HiFi Club. The night was responsible for showcasing a deeper\, more progressive side of dance music\, and introducing taste-making local and international artists to a developing city. \nSergio continues to push his sound and production ability into new territory\, collaborating with a growing league of producers representing the international landscape. His DJ sets quite often range in flavour but mostly waver in the house and techno realm with a lean towards tracked-out\, low end sounds. His solo productions are heavily inspired by dub techno legends and loop based producers\, and range from dance floor centric tracks to deep ambient textures. His reputation as a selector and live performer have allowed him to perform alongside some of the cultures most influential characters\, as well as won him prime time bookings at festivals such as Bass Coast and Shambhala. \nSergio has stepped into new realms of creativity with a move to Toronto in early 2015.
