SUMMARY:On the Cusp 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Eternal Dance of Capricorn & Aquarius\nThe end of one cycle\, the beginning of a new. As Capricorn gives way to Aquarius\, we come together as a beautiful community to celebrate transition\, transformation and triumph. To be here\, alive\, and given the opportunity to move in unity as the stars whisper tales to us of a new and bright future… heaven. And while some navigate by stars… others by compass… others by google… this night\, we together navigate by DANCE\, and we do so held in the ridiculous talent of tonight’s artistic contributors\, and in the warm glow of the unveiling of a reimagined Sunset Labs. 🙂 We hope you’ll join us!\n♥ ♥ ♥ \n  \nMUSICAL CONTRIBUTIONS FROM \nOcian Flo \nhttps://www.facebook.com/SoundSeedMedicineJourneys/\nOcian is an energy artist\, visionary\, community builder\, and spiritual activist working with groups and individuals to create and share experiences that build a conscious\, self-empowered\, intentional community. Ocian uses Sound Medicine as a branch of energy work and utilizes wordless vocal and crystal frequencies to balance the emotional\, mental\, physical and energetic bodies. She is a claraudient and is a channel of Source and the ancient Harmonic Language which is used to bring remembrance to the power of Self-Healing. \nAli & Chris \nDance Temple Cowichan\nhttps://soundcloud.com/aliesegenevieve\nAli Genevieve and Chris Bertin have been weaving their passion for music\, dance\, community and each other for 17 years.\nDevoted to the path of music & movement\, rhythm & motion this dynamic duo co-creates sound tapestries ranging from deep melodic beats to vocally infused tribal grooves. With Ali on the decks and Chris adding layers of percussion and didgeridoo\, this live+electronic music fusion inspires connection between the dancers and the music. \nRara Avis \n https://www.raraavismusic.com\nKnown in the music world as Rara Avis (n. latin for Rare Bird)\, Alex King-Harris is a dedicated master of his craft with over 20 years experience in multi-instrumental live performance and music production with a core focus on where the electronic underground\, yoga and ecstatic dance movements collide. He delivers musical performances that are a mixture of guitar\, vocals\, flute\, didgeridoo and dj techniques that combine pre-produced original studio music with live electronic elements to create a truly original\, shamanic\, heart felt transmission of music for embodiment. Whether it be in a yoga class\, on an ecstatic dance floor or at a festival – Rara’s sounds are guaranteed to take you on a journey of blissful re-entry into the soul. \nSpice Traders\n https://soundcloud.com/spicetradersmusic\nThe inescapable evolution of our beloved Kaminanda\, Spice Traders is the newest most beauteous creative expression of Stephen Medeiros… which he introduces to us as “Deep\, Slow Spacious Tribal House and Downtempo with a plethora of musicians and instruments”. Obviously… this is going to get spicy! \nDJ Rowan \nSublime Events | Sunset Labs\n https://www.mixcloud.com/rowansentesy\nRowan has been DJing and promoting events in BC for over a decade sharing the stage with mainstay festival acts like Adham Shaikh\, Gaudi\, Liquid Stranger\, Ganga Giri\, Delhi 2 Dublin\, Bluetech\, Saqi\, Desert Dwellers\, David Starfire\, Drumspyder\, Random Rab and more. Rowan’s creates sonic journeys layered with exotic textures\, hypnotic rhythms and soaring\, soulful melodies. This is what he is lovingly pulled towards\, again and again. \nDJ Dodd\nReturning Saturn | Sunset Labs\n https://facebook.com/TheDoddAbides/\nThe existence of Dodd has long been questioned by those who’ve not been on his dancefloor — but those who’ve been there are fast and thorough believers. From his humble beginnings as a dancefloor observer Dodd carefully catalogued the sounds and reactions of the people in order to pinpoint the perfect palette of progressive sounds. Whether you’re a believer or not\, with the speakers as his chorus\, you will be moved by the voice of Dodd… \nADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS FROM!\nOPENING CIRCLE!\nWe are crafting a really special welcome for this event… not ONLY because of the transition from Capricorn to Aquarius… not ONLY because it’s the debut of a transformed Sunset Labs… not ONLY because it’s the beginning of a whole new decade… not even ONLY because there’s some birthday folks in the house… but because YOU’RE coming\, and we’ll be together\, and we could all use just a bit more ceremony in our lives. Huge thanks to Dawn Dancing Otter\, Ocian Flo\, Melanie Lichtinger and Stephanie McColl for crafting this beautiful & participatory opening for our night together! \nCOSMIC CUSPINESS 2020!\n https://www.facebook.com/Astrology.for.SelfRealization/\nMelanie Lichtinger has been our local-cosmic Astro maven for even longer than On the Cusp has been happening @ Sunset Labs – lol. …with a knack for infinitely creative Astro Alchemy incl. original ways of working & playing with Zodiac cusp energy … and she is very excited to bring to you goodies of Cosmic Cuspiness! Around the Zodiac clock\, and esp. for CAPRICORN to AQUARIUS – where SO much is activated in 2020 – seriously …while what’s going on @ On the Cusp IS already a sweet expression of what that specific cusp is about! SUMMARY:Song of the Ancients Vocal Workshop
DESCRIPTION:SONG OF THE ANCIENTS\nVocal workshop with Peia\nEach one of us is gifted with a uniquely beautiful voice. Open to the transcendental sound within you guided by the wisdom and expertise of Archival Songstress Peia Luzzi. Through an embodied practice\, rooted in the breath you will learn: healthy body alignment for optimal sound production\, how to ground and harness the of power of the breath from your deep core\, how to tap into the natural resonance of your voice. \nWorking with tools from the ancient Indian alchemy of Raga we will enter a meditative practice known as “The Yoga of Sound.” We gain deeper understanding of the physical inner-workings of the voice from Vocal Pedagogy and learn to sing with grace\, power\, flexibility and ease. This workshop is beneficial for singers on all stages of the journey\, from very beginner to advanced. \nThe First part of this workshop will focus on vocal embodiment and cultivation tools\, and the second part we’ll be learning a song from one of the many lineages that Peia is carrying.\n  \nMy journey with world folksong traditions began many years ago while studying at New England Conservatory in Boston. Much to the dismay of my Opera professors\, I found myself enthralled with the alluring beauty and mystery of traditional folk music. This fascination\, along with a bit of old Irish wanderlust\, poised me for a journey that led me to seek a lost culture and reconnect with the songs of my ancestors in ancient Europe. – Peia \nLearn more about Peia and her work: WWW.PEIASONG.COM\n$40 per person\, via Paypal OR:\netransfer to payments@sunsetlabs.ca\nWe have some limited-means-tickets…\nif money is snug\, contact us. SUMMARY:The Beatin' Stick: Old European Thoughts on Restorative Justice
DESCRIPTION:How do we deal with harm and hurt in our communities?\nThis seems to be a question on many of our minds these days. \nOr you’ve seen it in the broader culture around you and certainly on Facebook – the divisiveness\, the polarization\, the meanness and the piling on. And this is amongst ‘the good guys’. It’s easy to lose hope that we’ll ever get anywhere. \nIgnoring it doesn’t work. \nBut many have begun to wonder if the call outs and cancellings\, the shamings and shunnings work any better in the end. Much of it feels ‘off’ somehow but there’s a fear of voicing this lest we are next. \nAt the heart of this fear that so many live with is a sort of cultural worshiping at the altar or the one true god of punitive justice – justice by punishment. The contagion of this seems to have been blown by the growing winds of our time to the left and to the right equally. \nBut there is another form of justice – deeply rooted in many traditional cultures from around the world. It is often spoken of as restorative justice or transformative justice. It’s an approach to dealing with the very real troubles and travails\, harms and harrowings that happen in our homes and communities that centers the healing and wholeness of the community. \nIn this evening\, you’ll be hearing an old Scottish Traveler’s tale ‘The Beatin’ Stick’ which will act\, if all goes well\, as a hospitable host to welcome us in and sit us down by the hearth and help us see something of what might be done about the madness and manias that\, so often\, tear our communities apart. Other stories likely to appear are ‘The King’s Foal’ and ‘The King’s Lamp’. \n\nPRICE: \nBy Donation at the End. $25 recommended. 100% of proceeds will be going to the Raven Trust whose mission it is to raise legal defense funds to assist Indigenous Peoples who enforce their rights and title to protect or restore their traditional territories. \n\nAbout Tad Hargrave:\nFor over a decade\, Tad has found himself drawn to conversations about how we might tend to the harm that’s done in communities in ways that leave the community stronger and more whole at the end – not more shattered. \nBetween Sept 2004 – Feb 2006\, Tad dedicated himself to learning his ancestral language\, Scottish Gaelic\, in both Nova Scotia and Scotland. He can speak Gaelic with conversational fluency. He also runs a blog called Healing from Whiteness as well as a Facebook group of the same name. He is a co-founder of the Nova Scotia Gael’s Jam and co-starred in Canada’s second Gaelic language film The Fiddler’s Reel. \nHe does improv comedy semi-professionally\, co-runs Edmonton’s progressive community building network TheLocalGood.ca\, founded streetcarshows.com\, indigodrinks.ca\, socialyogiyeg.com\, and the Jams program of yesworld.org. He speaks Scottish Gaelic and helps to run novascotiagaelsjam.com and is also a huge Doctor Who nerd. \nTad currently lives in Edmonton\, Alberta (traditionally known\, in the local indigenous language of the Cree\, as Amiskwaciy (Beaver Hill) and later Amiskwaciwaskihegan (Beaver Hill House) and his ancestors come primarily from Scotland with some from the Ukraine as well. He is drawn to conversations around politics\, history\, ancestry\, healing and how those all intersect.

SUMMARY:Chasing Ice Screening
DESCRIPTION:NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL \nPresented by Sunset Labs\, Be Love\, Surfrider & Dogwood \nYoung people are calling on adults around the world to join them this September to disrupt business as usual and support the Global Climate Strike on September 27. Ahead of the strike\, Sunset Labs\, Be Love\, Surfrider and Dogwood are bringing folks together to connect and learn how we can support the incredible young people who are leading the charge on climate action. \nCome and see an important and beautiful film that cuts to the core of why urgent climate action is so important\, and hear directly from one of the local youth strike organizers\, who will share what’s being planned and how businesses can get involved and show their support. \nTicket proceeds support youth climate strike organizers in Victoria. If you’re of limited means right now and wish to attend\, please reach out – money isn’t a barrier to your participation. \n6:30PM – DOORS\n7:00PM – WELCOME & FILM\n8:30PM – DISCUSSION\n9:00PM – COMPLETE! ♥ \nGET TICKETS HERE\n\nABOUT THE FILM\nAcclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog is an extreme person. So when his climate skepticism gives way to a commitment to documenting the mass extinction of glaciers around the Arctic\, he’s extreme about that too. He and his team – The Extreme Ice Survey – set up time-lapse cameras on Arctic cliff faces\, then check back annually to grab the data. Year after year\, the photos they capture tell the story of a planet – our home! – warming fast; the glaciers and ice mountains retreat before our eyes. We also witness the heroic lengths Balog will go to capture this story. Brutal weather\, four knee surgeries\, extended periods away from his family: the guy won’t quit. Which is lucky for us because the photos\, and this film\, are credited by many former climate deniers as the wake-up call they needed. Beautiful\, captivating\, disturbing\, eye-opening\, Balog’s photos were captured from 2005-2009 and this film by Jeff Orlowski was released in 2012\, and yet the urgency of this story is greater than ever. \nWatch the amazing Chasing Ice trailer here!: \n https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZTMVNBjc4\n \n\n ABOUT THE GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE\nThis September\, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone. \nWe hope you’ll participate in this movement in whatever way resonates with you. SUMMARY:Birthing the Urban Village
DESCRIPTION:Want to help birth the urban village?\nIt’s a time of social\, political\, economic\, cultural and environmental meltdowns\, and we need to regenerate ecosystems on a large scale — including and in particular the ecosystems of our cities! The urban environment is part of nature\, both impacted by the landscape around it and with profound effects on surrounding lands and waters\, as well as on the lives of their inhabitants. \nWith 68% of global population projected to be living in urban centres by 2050\, our cities are the global engines of culture\, creativity and economic innovation\, yet they are also often cold\, alienating and unsustainable. Can we bring the warmth and deep relatedness of the village to the urban streets\, and still keep the excitement and magic of urban living\, all while bringing our world back into balance with the nature that surrounds us? \nHow can we regenerate our cities\, our human ecosytems\, economies\, social interactions\, and human nature? How can we do so with an emphasis on culture building being core to our being\, not allowing ourselves to be thrown off of our core integrity and purpose\, while we also have to respond to what is throwing the world out of balance? This is the way to keep becoming stronger\, more connected with each other\, more resilient as our love for each other and the world grows more dear and fierce. \nJoin us IN PERSON or ONLINE for this panel presentation and community dialogue featuring an array of the west coast’s leading changemakers! \n  \n\nOUR PANELISTS:\nSTARHAWK | www.starhawk.org\nStarhawk is an author\, activist\, permaculture designer and teacher\, and a prominent voice in modern earth-based spirituality and ecofeminism. Reinterpreting his signature production style anew\, 2018 saw the release of two full-lengths charting the territories between deep space experimentalism\, intricate polyrhythms\, delicate soundscapes\, evocative acid\, and hypnotic dub elements. \nThe breadth of Noah’s sonic worldview can most easily be accessed through his monthly two-hour podcast\, IFS. Each episode reveals the depth of his technical approach\, the sensibility of a seasoned selector\, and the pedigree of a late-night veteran. A two-time Juno Award nominee in his native Canada\, a music educator and technologist in his adopted hometown Berlin\, an alum of Cynosure\, Highgrade\, and Trapez LTD\, and founder of the acclaimed Thoughtless imprint\, Noah is also a DJ whose past residencies at Stereobar in Montreal and Fukhouse in Toronto helped lay the framework for his dynamic yet fluid sets that continue to resonate with diverse communities. \nA notable newcomer in Canada’s underground scene of the early 2000s\, Pred’s distinctive production style earned him a place among his peers with releases on Immigrant\, Intrinsic Design\, and Consigned Recordings. Driven by the fuel that fired up Thoughtless\, Noah relocated to Berlin in 2011\, where his creative horizons continued to expand via collaborative projects with Tom Clark as False Image on Get Physical\, with Pablo Bolivar on Apparel and Biotop\, with Tim Xavier on Alphahouse\, and with Deepchild as Concubine. \nBetween his recent solo EPs for Traumraum\, Compute\, and Biotop\, his vivid sets of techno\, house\, and electro\, the advanced sound design of his haunting atmospherics\, and the ever-evolving scope of his technical capabilities\, Noah’s commitment to electronic innovation remains as strong as ever – and in the face of global uncertainty\, his utopian sonic narratives have never felt so vital. \nhttp://noahpred.com/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/noahpred.official\nhttps://soundcloud.com/noahpred \n————————— \nROWAN \nSublime Productions \nRowan has been DJing and promoting events in BC for over a decade sharing the stage with mainstay festival acts like Adham Shaikh\, Gaudi\, Liquid Stranger\, Ganga Giri\, Delhi 2 Dublin\, Bluetech\, Saqi\, Desert Dwellers\, David Starfire\, Drumspyder\, Random Rab and more.
