G++ Presents: Fish.e

Remember our 2011 interview with Limbic Media? Those crazy multimedia wizards are at it again! Fish.e is an interactive window-front art installation by Paul Reimer and Gabrielle Odowichuk, two of the artist/engineers at Limbic Media. It will premiere February 22nd at 8pm in the G++ gallery, along with more new sound-reactive lighting artwork that we have been developing.

Fish.e is a large wall of illuminated fish scales. These delicate scales are handmade out of tissue paper, which acts as a color diffusion layer for the LEDs that are mounted behind them. All of the lights can change each color independently; that is, over 500 LEDs, each with 2 million possible colours, and changing quickly and smoothly enough to do full video.

The intricate fish scales originally lined the sides of a golf cart that we took to the desert last year for the burning man art festival ( http://artcar.p-rimes.net/ ). We created the fish car out of a need to showcase how simple visuals patterns can produce extraordinary complexity and synesthetic effects.

We have been working for over a year with full color sound-reactive lighting — most recently including a large audio-reactive christmas tree in centennial square over christmas (http://www.limbicmedia.ca/blog/2013/01/07/wintertree/). For this exhibit, we combine an old project with new software that allows the glowing scales to react to both motion and sounds in layers that overlap and change. The unique design of the scales and dynamic lighting behaviours combine to make each interaction with Fish.e a rich and unique experience.
