Economics from an Indigenous Worldview
DIGITAL STORYTELLERS PRESENTS:
INDIGENOMICS: Economics from an Indigenous Worldview
Our team is still quite in AWE of the remarkable INDIGENOMICS event we hosted last week, an inspiring gathering that placed the spotlight on self-determination through business for First Nations people. Sunset Labs was honoured to play host to this powerful event, the incredible work of organizer Mikey Leung of DIGITAL STORYTELLERS.
A Glimpse of the INDIGENOMICS Event
The INDIGENOMICS event, organized and produced by Mikey Leung of DIGITAL STORYTELLERS, was a truly unique and engaging experience. With a hybrid format, it brought together participants from our local community and individuals from Canada, New Zealand, and Australia who joined both in person – and online. With a global interactive livestream produced by Stream of Consciousness, the event was a remarkable blend of the traditional and the digital, reflecting the theme of the event – the fusion of Indigenous values and modern economic realities.
The afternoon began with a captivating context-setting introduction by Carol Anne Hilton, the CEO and Founder of the Indigenomics Institute and the Global Centre for Indigenomics. Carol Anne’s dedication to amplifying the Indigenous perspective in the economic landscape was both inspiring and thought-provoking. Her book, “Indigenomics – Taking a Seat at the Economics Table,” encapsulates her mission to pave the way for Indigenous voices and perspectives in the global economy. It was a privilege to have her share her wisdom at the event.
Championing Indigenous Voices
The heart of the event was the riveting panel discussion, expertly moderated by Tiarne Shutt, Director of Business Development at First Australians Capital, and along with Carol Anne featured Te Puoho Katene, Executive Director of Tapuwae Roa. Tiarne’s ability to weave narratives and inspire action was truly remarkable. Her passion for social change through storytelling and relationship building resonated with all attendees.
A distinguished Executive Director and longtime advocate for targeted social change, Te Puoho Katene shared profoundly throughout the discussion. His dedication to fostering positive outcomes for Māori in areas such as education, traditional and scientific knowledge systems, and leadership development was truly commendable – and steeped in wisdom and personal anecdotes.
A Visual Journey through INDIGENOMICS
To capture the essence of the event, we assembled a gallery of photos taken throughout the day. These images serve as a heartfelt tribute to the vibrant atmosphere and dynamic conversations that unfolded at the event. First, a few favourites…

The ever-growing INDIGENOMICS context & conversation is of tremendous importance, and to be able to host and forward this ancient-yet-leading-edge dialogue is such a treat. Driven by the vision and passion of Mikey Leung of DIGITAL STORYTELLERS, the gathering really showcased the power of storytelling and community engagement to foster economic self-determination for First Nations people on a global scale.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to organizer Mikey Leung, speakers Carol Anne Hilton, Tiarne Shutt, Te Puoho Katene, and all the attendees in studio and online who contributed to the success of this event.
