Birthing the Urban Village
Birthing the Urban Village:
A Transformative Approach to Connected, Regenerative Cities
Last week Sunset Labs stage became the stage for an extraordinary event that brought together an array of visionaries, activists, and changemakers all under our one little roof. Titled “Birthing the Urban Village,” the event sought to address the pressing challenges of our time: social, political, economic, and environmental crises that demand a paradigm shift towards regenerating our urban ecosystems. With an impressive lineup of regional speakers, our evening together sparked a conversation about bring the village to the city, and transforming our cities into thriving, sustainable, and connected urban villages.
The Urgency of Urban Regeneration
As urbanization accelerates and the world’s population steadily moves towards city living, the need for urban regeneration becomes more critical than ever. The global engine of culture, creativity, and economic innovation lies within our cities, yet they often fall short in creating warm, welcoming, and sustainable environments. The event acknowledged the urgent call to action – to bring back the warmth and deep sense of community that defines a village, while still embracing the excitement and magic of urban living.
Inspiring Visionaries
The event’s speakers were luminaries in their respective fields, each advocating for a brighter and more sustainable urban future:
Starhawk: An influential voice in earth-based spirituality and ecofeminism, Starhawk’s teachings and writings encourage permaculture design grounded in activism and spirituality. Her work empowers individuals to reconnect with nature and engage in meaningful rituals that honor the earth.
Mark Lakeman: Embracing the art of placemaking, Mark envisions a restorative process where the complexities of urban life coalesce harmoniously. Through ecological and community repair, he instills a sense of empowerment in people, showing them that they have the capacity to create together and bring positive change.
Brandy Gallagher: With an impressive background in community development, Brandy has devoted her life to mobilizing communities towards a vision of regeneration. Her efforts seek to transform individuals into modern-day villagers, whether in urban or rural settings, to protect our collective future for generations to come.
Moderating the event was Mayor Lisa Helps, a dedicated advocate for a prosperous, affordable, and sustainable city. She was a great moderator, and her obvious commitment to innovative solutions resonated with the audience, inspiring hope for a future where cities flourish in deeper harmony with nature.
Fostering Dialogue and Change
The Birthing the Urban Village event was more than just a gathering of like-minded individuals; it sparked hope for a future where cities thrive as sustainable, interconnected, and vibrant urban villages, and was (we hope) yet another small community-driven catalyst for collective change. Both in-person and online participants deeply resonated with continued efforts to revillage our cities, for ourselves and future generations.
