It’s Not Altruistic

I’m an entrepreneur who cares deeply about my clients’ success… and it’s not simply out of altruism, but because it’s personal.

What we see happening in the world today is way beyond ‘concerning’. War & capitalism run amok, democracies upended, economics manipulated, cascading failure of environmental stability… all of it birthing a future that feels so uncertain for the next generation. I know you see this.

At the same time, I see something else unfolding alongside all of that – people stepping forward to reimagine how we live together, to protect what matters, and to build systems that are more just, more relational, and more life-centered. Do you see this too?

That’s where my work lives.

Through Sunset Labs and Stream of Consciousness, I’ve built my work life around finding and lifting these people. Not by being the one on the stage, but by helping ensure their work reaches the audiences who need it. My role is to create the container, to build the bridge, to amplify the signal so that important ideas don’t stay small or isolated.

Because the truth is simple: when they succeed, the world gets better… and I, and my family, and my community, get to live in that world.

I’ve felt this so clearly during the Pink Shirt Day broadcasts we’ve supported over the years. We’ve had the privilege of seeing kids from across the country join live, their faces lighting up as they engage with conversations about compassion, connection, boundaries, and how to take care of themselves and each other. It’s an extraordinary thing to witness the next generation learning these values in real time, and to know that our work plays even a small role in carrying those messages to them. In those moments, the impact isn’t abstract. It’s immediate, human, and so deeply real.

The same is true, in different ways, with gatherings like Indigenomics, where new economic frameworks are being explored through Indigenous worldviews, or the Victoria Forum, where global voices come together to wrestle with questions of belonging, governance, and the future of our societies. These are not just events or projects. They are living conversations about the future we are all stepping into, and they require care, clarity, and amplification.

THIS IS MY WHY. I am intentionally lifting up the people and organizations I believe the world most needs to hear right now – the ones working to shift our trajectory toward something more viable, more compassionate, and more enduring.

I don’t experience this work as selfless. It is self-serving in the most honest sense of the word, because supporting people who are working toward a better world is how I take care of my own life, and the lives of my family and community. I am not separate from the outcomes they are working toward. I am directly invested in them.

And, you may have noticed, I’ve never felt called to be the primary voice, the teacher, or the one leading from the front. I do prefer to be behind the camera, or the stage, or the show… but I do feel a strong sense of responsibility for the world we are collectively shaping, and a more-and-more clear understanding of where I can contribute. Building these 2 little businesses has been the best way I can see to create the conditions for that contribution, if that makes sense, places where important work can be seen, heard, and felt… and where ideas can move beyond the rooms they start in.

So this little note is, first and foremost, an expression of deep gratitude. To the clients and collaborators who have trusted us with their work – thank you! It is an honour to help carry what you are building into the world. And to everyone, whether we have worked together or not, who is actively trying to create something more just, more connected, and more life-giving – THANK YOU! Your work shapes the world I live in, and the world my children will inherit.

It is worth asking, from time to time, whether the work we are doing is contributing to the kind of world we actually want to live in. The world does not change all at once. It changes through the accumulation of what we choose to build, support, and amplify, day after day.

If you are building something that serves the world in this way, and you are looking for a partner to help bring it to life, that is exactly what we do at Sunset Labs and Stream of Consciousness. Reach out anytime, we’d love to connect and hear about your own vision and how it creates the future world we all know is possible.
