A New Community Makes Waves

This past Saturday, Sunset Labs had the honor of hosting the official launch of SeaLight—a powerful new community committed to bridging the gender gap in the maritime industry. With attendees both in-person and online, it was an afternoon filled with energy, purpose, and unity around a shared vision for inclusivity on the water.

A Message from SeaLight’s Founder

The event opened with a warm welcome to those gathered in Sunset Labs and to viewers tuning in from across Canada via livestream on Facebook, Zoom, and YouTube, thanks to Sunset Labs’ advanced broadcast capabilities. By 3 pm, the studio was buzzing with anticipation as Kamila Calko, SeaLight’s founder and the first woman to qualify for the Pacific Pilotage Authority’s examinations, took the stage. Kamila’s passion for transforming the maritime industry was palpable as she spoke about her journey and her mission to make waves of change for women on the water. “After two decades navigating uncharted territory as a female captain, I wanted to create a beacon for women in the industry,” she shared, describing SeaLight as a movement fueled by education, community, and support for women at sea.

Powerful Perspectives from Industry Leaders

The event’s lineup of speakers was a true highlight. Kamila was joined by esteemed colleagues who each brought their own dynamic perspectives and experiences. This powerful group included Loren Perraton, General Manager at Victoria Tug & Barge; Jason Woods, President at ILWU Local 400; Wyll River from Soul Craft Counselling & Coaching; Captain Eden Ki from HaiSea Marine; and Commanding Officer Lara Barrett of the CCGS Jean Goodwill at the Canadian Coast Guard. Each speaker shared heartfelt stories, insights, and a steadfast commitment to SeaLight’s vision of an equitable future in the maritime sector.
